Hey guys,
So I have been networking lately (mostly with alumni), and have had around 10 informational interviews so far this summer. Mostly, the format of the calls have been:
- Small talk / talk about college
- I ask questions about their firm, how they got their job, market trends, and other questions that result in the natural flow of the conversation.
- I end with asking for any advice they may have for me, and if the interview went well, I ask for another contact within the firm to talk to.
Rarely, if ever, does the person I am talking to ask any questions that go deeper than "Tell me about yourself?" so I haven't really had to answer anything other than fit questions. Often times, people, including myself, look at info. interviews as a necessary part of the networking process, and nothing more. This leads into my question.
With SA interviews coming up, I wonder if their is any overlap between the two types of interviews? Should I try and steer the info. interview in a different direction in order to practice for actual interviews? Is there any value to info. interviews beyond networking?
I always think the point of an info interview is for you to learn more about them and the job not the other way around. Beyond giving them some background on yourself they're not really going to ask interview type questions unless you specifically ask for a mock interview
