Intern panic… advice needed please!
Recently started an internship in wealth management and am learning that I want absolutely nothing to do with this career. I want to go into equity research and then eventually portfolio management.
When I interviewed, I was told that we’d be doing research as an analyst into different companies (even valuing them) and so far, all I’m tasked with is learning how to be a salesperson.
I’ve studied FCFF/FCFE/ROPI/Div discount valuations on firms with interest rate, subscriber count, $/BBL drivers for the valuation models. I have an excellent understanding of how to value a company; all of my analyst theses’ have played out profitably.
I don’t come from a target school (I go to a STEM school,) my gpa is low, but I have an actual track record of beating the market with client funds (college runs a program where you create a long only fund and buy/sell using REAL money, I was the chairman for one of these teams.) I also have a TON of leadership experience; I run my own business with five employees, I led a fraternity out of a house fire to beat every metric before the house fire (recruitment, philanthropy etc)
As said earlier, I want to go into equity research then eventually portfolio management. How does someone from a background like mine make this happen?
I have a contact who’s situation was strikingly similar to yours. He got into ER at a highly regarded MM bank. He first did credit ratings research at one of the big 3 rating agencies (which is easier to break into), and easily pivoted to ER. Once you’re in ER you can get into HF from there. Hopefully you find a way, good luck
