My laptop is finally fried. I got it 4 years ago. When I first got it I used it to game so I had certain upgrades to graphics and memory and it was about $1000. I'm about to graduate college and definitely won't have time for any of that, so I just need it for netflix and Internet browsing and videos.
I've seen a lot of people recently with ipads that have a stand and a physical keyboard. They look super convenient. If I could get PowerPoint and word on it, would you all think it would be a good replacement for a laptop? One of the negatives is I doubt it has an hdmi.
Any apple fans? Thoughts? And actually I'm not huge on apples (I have a Samsung s6) so I might look into cheaper alternative brands.
No way. iPads are great, but they're great for what they are: devices to play games on and watch videos. You can easily get a good laptop for just a few hundred dollars more.
You kind of asked two different questions. If you "just need it for netflix and browsing" then of course the iPad would suffice. Hell, it can do way more productive things than that.
If you plan to use it for powerpoint and excel though, you're going to run into problems. I'm not saying it will be impossible, especially if you get the iPad Pro since the excel demo at the unveiling looked pretty good, but at that point you're going to be paying laptop prices to get something the size of a laptop that has 85-95% of the excel functionality. Maybe this will improve over time, and I obviously haven't used excel on an iPad Pro, but it's something to keep in mind. As far as getting an android tablet, your functionality will be a lot closer to zero.
Something to look into would be a Surface Pro. It runs full excel, hooks up to a monitor, and is iPad-esque.
I second the surface pro. If you want a tablet that can also do computer tasks when you need them, then that is definitely the way to go. But if you already have the ipad, and are asking if it will be feasible, then yes. You could even just use the Apple productivity suite or whatever it's called and use their products but then export to .doc, .ppt, etc.
Take it from someone who tried what you're saying: no. The iPad just isn't a productivity tool, no matter how much Apple tries to fashion it as such. I'm a huge Apple nerd but they've really been full of shit recently.
That said, you have two options. If cost is your primary concern, forget tablets entirely. None of them will be as cost effective as a similarly-priced laptop from Lenovo, Acer et al. If you need productivity over price, stop pussyfooting and get a laptop anyway. The only contender in this space is, as above, the Surface Pro. And if you really have a giant monkey sack (of cash...), get the Surface Book.
Just use your work laptop. Don't waste money on your own.
Hah, that's a decent point if the OP is gainfully employed. Buy an iPad for your personal use and use the work computer for work.

No. Don't bother. You can get a fantastic work laptop for less than the price of the Ipad.
Ipads and their competitors only really excel at one productivity task: if you're still in school they're great for taking notes in class.
