Is it ok/ethical to volunteer etc just to put it on my resume?
i've been going to a shelter to feed the homeless once a month for the off chance i can use it in an interview, isn't this a win win?
i tried starting an investing club so i can put it on my resume
what else, i've also helped tutor SAT math,
all of this so i seem more "well rounded"
let's be honest most of us wouldn't do them if we couldn't get credit for them, right?

Or you just find something that you are passionate about and help out in that way and actually do it because you enjoy it. Odds are pretty good an interviewer will see through any BS and it can end up making you look bad. If you enjoy it, your whole demeanor changes when discussing it. I used to volunteer at a homeless shelter because I loved it and wanted to give back to those in rough situations (coming from a similar situation) and show them that they can succeed. What things do you enjoy? To be completely honest you kind of sound like you are entitled and a little bit spoiled in your comment, and don't really have respect for other people outside of your bubble. So, before worrying about impact on your resume think about fixing yourself so you aren't viewed as a POS. You obviously have a long way to go and I am sure real life will eventually get to you and you will gain more respect for others but until then just keep doing what you are doing.
I volunteered at a prison for awhile (vague on purpose). My whole perspective about petty things such as GMAT prep, year end reviews, month end reporting, and so forth became pretty moot when I saw the sheer joy those prisoners had when I was there to help out with said activity.
It's not itemized on my resume as I helped out at that prison many years ago; but it falls under the word 'volunteering' which is the last line of my resume containing interests, involvement, and enrichment items. Should a hiring manager ask about the item, I could go into great detail about the causes near and dear to my heart.

It’s disingenuous in that you don’t really care about the cause you’re supporting, but unethical? Don’t think it really matters why you volunteer as long as you do and you put your best foot forward. Besides, college admissions and job applications have become an arms race of extracurriculars, so you’d be stupid not to do whatever it takes to stay competitive.
1 of 2 things will happen. Interviewer won't care and it won't give you any edge.
Interviewer will care and ask you more about saving the whales. It will become clear that you half-ass volunteered to put a line on your resume and the interviewer will see through the BS quickly.
