I've been to NYC several times but haven't really partied extensively. But almost everyone I've talked to who lives there tells me how NYC is so much fun and doesn't really get boring, people are interesting, etc. To what extent is this true? What makes NYC so much more fun than other cities like LA, SF, Boston, Chicago, etc.?

A city is fun if you're fun. If you like to have fun, you'll find interesting things to do anywhere.
i bang my keyboard at work all day so I wouldn't know fun.
it's got a great atmosphere. partying is generally only fun if you're with friends or enjoy people watching. i love watching toolish ibankers with 'models' at the clubs. it's always enjoyable. but if you like shopping, great food, museums, and walking around, it's definitely a good place.

How do you know these guys with models are bankers? Is it that obvious or do you ask them?
My sister in NYC always tells me how she sees ugly guys with ridiculously hot girls. It's pretty funny.

a lot of the bankers can't help but insert their profession into every sentence and act like total jerks. I guess that's not fair for me to generalize, but that's what i've seen. Plus, they're checking their blackberries like crazy. The girls are usually lower end models of non-prestigious agencies who are looking for a sugar daddy, essentially. a typical conversation would include the girl asking the guy what he did for a living. Plus, ibankers just carry themselves way differently from say a socialite or guys/girls from born money do.
But in all honesty, the best times I've had at the clubs were with a group of friends...i'm not trying to pick up any weirdos.

Money helps, not as much as you think though.
What people value over time shifts. There are large swaths of women, at a point in there life (late 20s, early 30s) realize they want a certain lifestyle and dont particularly want to work for it. The ability of a man to provide that is something they find attractive, moreso than good looks.
^^ hmm...that brings us to the question..what does make a man attractive??
well for starters, i like tall and athletic/fit men. and confidence helps a lot. attractiveness is relative and subjective, so that depends on each person, but personality is definitely a big factor for me as well.
then again if you're only looking for someone wealthy, you might be able to overlook everything on the premise that he's got $$$.
or like you say you find confidence attractive, they find wealth attractive.
C'mon who are we kidding? Both men and women forego looks if a partner is wealthy.
Case #1: A certain guy friend of modest looks (short, bald) and equivalent modest midwest middle class upbringing snagged himself a very wealthy younger Russian wife and he is the "leisurely" one in that marriage.
Case #2: A certain girlfriend of modest looks, yet also previously a telecom executive married a hotel tycoon, quit her job and is now a stay at home wife. When her husband sort of candidly asked her one day if she would have married him if he didn't have money, she jokingly (sorta) said "absolutely not!" :-)
The city is what you make of it really, as long as you have balls and are not lazy, you'll be pretty happy here.
