Keep getting declined on AirBnb for this summer

Have messaged hosts requesting a few places for the summer in NY and keep getting some combination of "sorry not available for your dates" when they clearly are or that they don't take first timers (I've never booked on AirBnb before).

One did let me book but then decided against it afterward and tried to get me to cancel before the 48 hour acceptance period so that "I wouldn't lose money." Obviously that was a total lie and they just wanted me to cancel so they wouldn't be penalized for having to decline. And before anyone asks, yes I have all my stuff verified, have a good profile pic, etc...

I guess I'm just venting but this is way more frustrating than any IB interview was.

Airbnb sucks. Have had several horrible experiences with them for month+ rentals and swore I wouldn’t do it again. You’ll fight to rent from these landlords and then get screwed with a shitty apartment that was falsely advertised.

Would try to use your network and sublease from someone. There’s also marketplaces where you can do this. Obviously have to be sharp but trust me, in the long run it will be way better.

Commenter above is probably right that long term airbnb is rubbish.

If you still want to go that way if possible ask parents  to book for you and lie to landlord. I could honestly care less how they feel about me. Just don't have any wild parties.

AirBnb is NYC is not really a thing (was illegal for a long long time, 30 day min for rentals) so there are few quality hosts and lots of scammy people. Be careful having your parents book and a 21 year old showing up though... that is a great way to lose your deposit and have nowhere to stay, they can cancel scot free.

I'd look into Facebook groups - Sweats & the City Apartment Group has a million summer sublets, also look for NYU sublet groups for students leaving for the summer. It's on the later side to get housing so try to do this ASAP. Depending on the NYU deadline maybe get that process going as a backup... NYC rental prices are at all time highs so lots of qualified people are trying to wait that out in Airbnbs/sublets so it's very competitive

It's not exactly illegal (you're 90% correct though)  You can rent out your spare bedroom if you're still living there but not the entire place. A friend used to do it at his place way uptown. (he sold it when he got divorced)  He also had a cute place in Asbury.  Despite saying "No Prom Parties" he had the most hilarious running series of kids trying to rent it out.  Yeah, he'd post their emails on facebook.

I never did crazy stuff for prom, but I spent most of my summer 20s in Sea Isle.  Let's just say that having three lawyers and a FBI agent in the house was very much needed.  Having the county ADA in our women's auxiliary didn't hurt either. (Rule #1, girls cannot be part of the house, rule #2, you must sign up and do a chore every morning, rule #3, if you pass out with your shoes on it's fair game [having a 'minty fresh' ear for a weekend isn't fun-toothpaste lingers])

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

I’ve had 90% good experiences with AirBnB. Check their ratings and also it gets easier to book when you have more positive ratings from previous trips.
