Keys to maintaining good health - health tips that work

Hey fellow monkeys,

This post is all about your keys to maintain good health/health tips that actually work. Note: this post is meant to help our monkeys function optimally at work and in their personal lives.

Some maturity is presumed - something ik isn’t common in our industry or at least among male bankers.

Feel free to ask questions related to the topic below as it’s easier for everyone to see the answers in one thread and not waste time searching more than one thread.

My tips that actually work:

1. Know your body - know as much info about your body as you actually can - e.g. how your body reacts to certain foods etc. this will save you so much unnecessary tears and stress

2. Try to eat a good diet - with my lifestyle, I know this isn’t always possible but I try to eat healthy/variety as much as I can.

I don’t like salads though and should probably eat more vegetables but I’m young and sort of undecided re how I’m going to have time to eat more veggies. I’m basically vegetarian but eat chicken 1-2x week.

I love rich cheeses, quality dairy beverages, croissants etc. but I’m quite picky of when I eat them because I’m trying to maintain my figure but I feel like no matter how hard I try to balance it I could always do better.

3. Automate tasks that cause you stress if you can find a reliable alternative - ik the firm pays for dry cleaning although I’m from a “old-money family” so you can’t trust this.

4. Always keep a (spare) pair of good shoes and don’t wear high-heels everyday. I’d prefer to wear heels but I know the health risks aren’t worth it.

My spare-pair is so I can go for a brisk walk when stressed or have time to exercise. Tbh I walk when I eat between meetings/calls but I’m trying to break this habit (harder-than-it-seems) because it’s unhealthy for women specifically.

5. Choose a supportive partner - now everyone has different needs/wants but my philosophy is if I’m going to date I expect my partner to look at us, like this: him - bf, me - gf, together - us. And we have to agree to make our decisions based on us first. I really hate the BS advice in the media.

If I see something that I think looks nice on my bf, I’ll buy it for him without expectations. I see so many women who give but expect their bf to give them something of the same or greater value in return.

If a guy was only interested in buying me *usually* unnecessary purchases and didn’t spend any time discussing us or spending *some* of his time with me on a weekly basis I wouldn’t date him. I also think maintaining a healthy sex life is important.

6. Know/discuss your menstrual cycle with your partner (as long as you trust him).

My work is incredibly stressful and at some point, I lost my period completely. This was the alarm bell I needed to reorganize my work/life as I want children in the future and am trying my best to ensure.

I am living a life that will support this as being a mother (eventually) is an important priority for my future-self as I feel it’ll make me very happy and I can use my skills that I don’t have time to use now.

I like baking for fun and when I started, I didn’t have high hopes, but when I share what I bake, I get really good feedback. I feel so much healthier when I eat what I cook/bake and want my future children to have this as young children have delicate immune systems so I want to be able to cook/bake for them and my husband (hopefully he’ll be there to eat with us) as much as possible - as in at least 1 family meal per day minimum.

Good topic, a very important one.

One of the common issues I have observed in iBanking is stress-eating, esp late night, as pressure builds up, the worst food habits come out - I don’t have a concrete solution here but one thing that’s kinda worked for me is protein smoothies (without peanut butter version) esp if you can customise the ingredients

For such smart people IB juniors can be stupid and will focus more on maxing out the food allowance for dinner and late night snacks (and end up eating it), - don’t or atleast don’t order only for your self, may be order something extra for a friend in the bullpen or something to drink for later to be kept in the refrigerator

Hey there, fellow finance aficionado! I'm glad you're taking the time to prioritize your health amidst the hustle and bustle of the finance world. Here are some tips that I've found to be effective, based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Stay Active: Try to incorporate some form of exercise into your daily routine. This could be as simple as a 15-20 minute walk or a few sets of push-ups, sit-ups, and squats. Even doing laps around the office can be beneficial compared to sitting all day.

  2. Eat Well: It's easy to fall into the trap of eating convenient, but unhealthy food. Try to focus on less processed food like oatmeal, fruits, vegetables, and meat. Avoid snacks that have excess sugar and ingredients you can't pronounce.

  3. Limit Alcohol: Try to reduce alcohol consumption to social drinking.

  4. Manage Stress: Be maniacal about what goes into your body. Consider meal prep or a meal prep delivery service.

  5. Sleep: Aim for at least 6+ hours of sleep. It might not always be possible, but make it a priority when you can.

  6. Meditate: Learn how to breathe and pay attention to your breathing. Knowing when you're under pressure is the first step to dealing with it intelligently.

Remember, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a marathon, not a sprint. It's about making small, sustainable changes that you can stick to in the long run. Keep your head up, make the commitment to yourself, and remember it's not forever. You've got this!

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

I think being someone who works out is such an incredible 'floor' to all healthy habits. If you work out, then you have a 'floor' - a basic minimum of standards - you don't eat shitty food cuz you think of your physique, you don't stay up all night, you don't smoke or drink excessively, you don't play vidya for days on end. Even under stress - because it's a habit at this point. Life isn't a yolo if you have standards. Imo it's like the wonderful summarization of Scripture - if you just love thy neighbour, then by default, you won't kill or steal, etc

It's better to count ingredients than to count calories. Eating whole foods and minimally processed foods (e.g., greek yogurt) will almost always be a healthier option.

Thanks for sharing these health tips! I can relate to trying to balance a healthy diet with a busy lifestyle. I've found that incorporating small habits, like using lymphatic drops regularly, has helped me maintain my energy levels and overall well-being. It's great to see discussions like this where we can share personal experiences and advice for staying healthy in our demanding roles.
