Leaving the industry
Idk if anyone has thoughts on this but I’m debating doing something completely different. Have done the 2 years banking + 2 years buyside. Can stay at current place if I want but honestly am getting fatigued in finance. I used to love it but I don’t have that same feeling I used to have. W/L balance is fine, so not an hours issue. Maybe I’m an idealist or some people can talk me away from this decision. Some days I wonder if I would be benefitted by being forced to make a decision by my workplace.
Hey guy,
life's too short to be miserable. If you're not feeling enthused and stimulated you what you do everyday then what's the point? I assume you're in your 20s without a wife/children or any real commitments. It's not too late to take a finance hiatus and focus on your actual passions for a bit. If you are a competent individual, which it seems like you are, you should have no problem landing on your feet if you chose to pivot. You could also always return to the industry if all else fails.
I'll end this with a quote from Leo Tolstoy - "If you want to be happy, be"
It’s annoying because I’m not miserable, just like not super motivated by my current work. I appreciate the sentiment though, maybe some time off to explore would be good for me... been debating that... Covid-19 doesn’t help in wanting to go travel though + it feels selfish to be thinking this way
Jah definitely feel. Not being super motivated by what you do is definitely draining and makes you have an existential crisis (at least I used to for a while until I switched roles).
Man COVID fucked us all on the travel thing. Whatever, I say kick ass for 6 months and see what the landscape is like in 6 months. If you have enough of a safety net go volunteer or something.
That actually sounds so great... maybe that says something about what I should be doing right now
Go for it man. I am currently in IB and a year ago was set on going to PE but have realized since then that I don’t enjoy the work. The immediate opportunity cost of leaving will only grow and make it more difficult to break free the longer you stay.
No clue what I might do next but would love to find a home on the operations side of things somewhere. Curious what you think you might want to do instead?
