Life in Boston?

Potentially moving there soon, any specific clubs or groups to join to make friends? City as a whole seems much cleaner and far more quaint than NYC. I'll have a car so access to suburbs is there for more space if needed.

From a former resident who lived there 20 years and, attended college there, worked in my current industry there and the bar industry, I'd say stay away from Seaport and Southie. These areas are much more locals only and transplants. Locals stay to themselves at first till they get to know you and the bars and brewery are much larger and sterile. Honestly, anywhere into Slummerville, Cambridge, Watertown, Newton, Brookline, and into areas like JP, West Roxbury, Brighton/Alston (depending on age), you will find more local restaurants and bars. Go a couple of times during the work week; you'll get to know the regulars and bartenders. Also, as others have mentioned, there are good Sports leagues and pickup leagues, from kickball to rugby, tennis, pickleball, and swimming. It's a great way to meet other people, and usually, there will be a local on the team who will introduce you around once they get to know you.

Boston it takes time to get to know people as it's a college town and Bio medical so lots of people coming and going and maybe not staying. Groups that stay stick to themselves so small cliques. I honestly really liked living in the Brighten/Brookline area, and it had the most neighborhood feel to it, near Washington Square Coolidge Corner.

Don't get me wrong there are huge bars in Southie and downtown but it'll be much harder to meet people at them.

To follow up on this, I forgot to mention that I moved away when I was newly single and in my mid-to late 30s. All my friends were married and had kids, so they all moved away from the city to the suburbs. Then, I had to make the trip to see them, as I didn't have to pack the car up with the kids. Some stayed close but many ventured further and further out. I myself ended up in Wellesley and Dedham. It's much more younger crowd these days.

Here my thoughts as someone who moved from the NY area up to the Boston area.

City as a whole is much cleaner and more calm feeling compared to NYC
Ive found that a lot of people that go to college in Mass end up working in Boston post college. Making new friends can be challenging for that reason but not impossible as there are plenty of transplants here. Joining a rec league, volunteering and getting to know coworkers can be good ways to build a new friend group up here. It just takes some extra effort compared to moving to a place you already have friends in.

Housing isn’t cheap but you may find going out on the weekends is cheaper than NYC.
