Lifting and IBD

As many of you know, IBD and other institutional finance roles require us to sacrifice a HUGE chunk of our time for the dinero. Personally, fitness has always been a large part of my identity. Having played sports growing up and now lifting for 5 years, I don't want to eventually lose myself (and lose my gains), yet I also don't want to work in any other industry. I know this concern might seem a little bit silly, but seriously I am interested in how some of you guys manage to make time for fitness.

I personally don’t have time. My hours are from 7:30am to between 10:30pm-midnight. After work I’m way too wiped to work out. I don’t have it in me to wake up for a 5:00am workout either…

Yes I noticed that my strength has not been about pushing reps or anything (yes I can still lift weight and my back hurt less since i dont do it everyday) but it has been like you know like that type of cartoon where the guy is too buff (anaerobic) vs the guy who is flexible and still strong because he grew up a caveman/jungle so he is like strong but his muscle can perform many ways (i can counter my bodyweight+20% now) so yeah you are basically going back to animal jungle instinct with calisthenics and your build will naturally be balanced!

I think the key to this is getting a luxury building with a small gym in it where you can knock out a quick 20-30min workout in the morning.

You'll find a way to work it in if you're truly committed. No, you won't be able to workout for an hour and a half, but you can easily fit in 30-40 min ~5 times a week. Especially with wfh. If you're firm is going to be hybrid (Monday and Friday wfh is what I think some are doing), then make sure you're working out Friday-Monday. This way you guarantee 4 workouts a week and hopefully get 1-2 more days during the middle of the week. A good amount of groups have down time in the evenings where analysts will leave for about an hour to workout. Or you could wake up early and workout before work to guarantee it happens.

Big factor in maintaining your physique through your stint is going to be nutrition. It's fine to cheat on a friday or saturday night out with friends but be strict during the week. Might have to reduce cals or carbs since you're not moving much during the day. Nutrition will also help tremendously with energy levels so that you're able to workout despite working the long hours. Obviously make sure you're getting enough protein (can be hard with seamless dinners. I'll be bringing my lunch and a protein shake to office when we return). Drink a ton of water too.

Hope this helps.

Training back then biceps would give you a more efficient workout and better gains for both back and biceps. Biceps are secondary muscles that are used to assist in a compound movement such as back training (pull movements). If you train biceps in the morning, you’ll deplete their glycogen storage (energy used for muscles to work), and they’ll be toasted and won’t be able to assist in your back workout. You won’t be able to lift heavier loads come time for back training in the afternoon which will hinder back development. However you won’t have problem if you switch the sequence. Training back first won’t fry your biceps as back muscles are the primary mover and biceps only assist. You’ll be able to manage a heavier load training back leading to better gains and it won’t compromise your bicep development either. Ideally it’s best to fit these two in one single workout if time permits as it’ll be a more efficient use of absolute time.

That's a good idea. I've seen many actors take that route as well when they are shooting 12+ hours. And more importantly, it's p feasible. In regards to dieting, have you been meal prepping or using a meal prep service? Seamless is horrible as the macros on most of the restaurants are dog water.

I personally don’t care for being jacked. I just train muscles and do stretches that will help my posture and allow my body to weather a sedentary lifestyle. Attaining a good physic is an after-thought for me and will come as a by-product from my training which is centered around body wellness. That said, I’m not too concerned about macros and just try to have a good diet and be on a maintenance or slight surplus level so my muscles don’t atrophy from training. I don’t track and just go by feel. But also because I’ve done the whole macros thing and generally know how much food is maintenance.

Like you stated, if seamless has bad macros then look for a meal prep service and then make a decision between prep from home and service based on convenience, cost, how it fits your diet etc.

German Volume Training - 3/4 times a week. Its what I've done albeit I'm new to the industry so may not be a long-term solution. But its been really good in terms of actually packing some muscle with reasonable time in the gym. Chest and Back / Legs and Abs / Arms and then I alternate the three for the fourth day. I have a bike at home so I do cardio thrice a week too. But definitely take a look at it. Its hard af but you get a huge pump, feels good, and you'll definitely maintain or gain muscle.

You're gonna have to lose your gains. It's not exactly ideal that you care about your muscles so much then you'll even sacrifice part of your employment.

bankers don't usually have time to regularly work out. It's not the end of the world losing your muscles. Girls will still want to have sex with you. Focus on what you're doing with your life. You're not a college senior.

If other people are able to find time throughout the day to lift, what makes you think it is impossible. I believe that exercise can and will help improve functioning at work as well. Sure some people might wake up, go to work, sleep, and repeat, but others might also be passionate about and would like to continue to foster their hobbies.

There are plenty of members here who are able to balance their hobbies and are able to continue to work in the industry. Contrary to popular belief not everyone in IB was the kid who was bullied throughout life. Many of us were athletes and leaders of various clubs growing up. To say that lifting and sex goes hand in hand makes me think you were the odd cookie out of the bunch growing up because if that's how you associate these two together... yikes! Let's not even start on that path.

Many people work long hours at a high paying job to be able to afford high end watches, designer clothes, or a luxury car. Well being fit (muscular, low body fat %) is that instead of driving in your 8-series BMW to and from work, or on a weekend joy ride, you live in it every minute of every day.

Do you want girls to 'still have sex with you' because of your money, or that you buy them stuff? Or (gasp) because they are actually attracted to you?

Not a college senior? Do you truly believe having a fit body loses benefits after college? It should 100% be a priority over your career. Not in the fact that your work performance will suffer, but it should be a big rock part of your life that you build around. You can give 12-15 hours of your day to your employer but not save 1 hour for yourself to stay healthy? Prolong your quality of life? Make you feel better around the clock? Look better in clothes? Have women check you out when you walk into a room (before you even tell them what you do for a living?).

I dont throw monkey shit often but this comment deserves it

Started my first year and its pretty tough ngl. I tried to go in the mornings but you don't want to give up proper sleep to workout either. Now I try to go Friday night and sometime Saturday for heavy days and then 1-2 times during the week for shorter hypertrophy workouts. Agree with one of the other comments about maybe finding an apartment that has a gym in the building. If you can find one that has a proper gym (bench / squat rack etc) and you have WFH days, then you can sneak down and workout til you get pinged. I have a gym fairly close to my apartment but still get kinda anxious if I left in the middle of the day and having it in my building would've made a big difference. A building with a proper gym will be pretty high on the higher end of what I'd want to spend tho, more like 2k+ and I'm paying well under that.

This topic wasn't intended to be focused on picking up women. I was generally interested in the methods that people use to stay in shape while having a bustling life style.

But. Why not pick them up with physical looks and money? You would just be higher up on the 10 scale if you had both LOL.
