LinkedIn mlm companies

I’ve been on LinkedIn for a good bit now. I’ve got like 130 connections and it’s been an overall pleasant experience (aside from all the braggy posts but I mean it’s LinkedIn). More often lately I’ve been getting requests from those multi level marketing companies like vector and what not. It’s a real nuisance. I ignore one message from someone who works there that I accidentally connected with and suddenly 4 more try and add me. Is LinkedIn that essential to networking? I feel like I won’t be able to make real meaningful connections now because now my profile seems to be picking up traction with mlm profiles more than anything.

Are you actively recruiting right now? There are settings within your profile to make it full private (only people with a direct link to your profile can see it, you won’t appear in search) and if I recall, there’s a semi-private setting that focuses on recruiters - not quite sure how it works.

It sucks, but as any social media platform does, LinkedIn suffers from a massive number of phishing, spam, and bot accounts that fill up faster than you can blink. While it’s not a solution to your issue, my M.O. is just to ignore ‘em. Best of luck.

It'll be less common once you graduate and have a real job. MLMs go after college kids because many are desperate for experience and struggle to quickly identify red flags

In terms of actions you can take, I wouldn't lock down your privacy settings since you want visibility for now at least. However, you can reduce the amount of spam you're getting by being conscious of who you're adding -- don't accept people unless you know them, you have or are likely to cross paths with them e.g. people at the same college, or they send a message with a good reason to connect. For every spammy user you add you'll just get more since all of a sudden you share a mutual with all of the spammy user's connection lists, which unsurprisingly will also have a lot of spammy users
