Man-made meat around the corner

Looks like the world's first lab-grown burger is ready to go on August 5.

The 5-ounce burger, created by Mark Post from Maastrict University in the Netherlands, will be fed to an unknown diner whose reaction will be seen in front an invitation-only crowd.

The guy working on the lab meat has a broader goal than to just experiment:

Post isn't pursuing this project because he's a mad scientist. His ultimate goal is to develop a sustainable source of food that will meet the ever-growing demand for meat without destroying and depleting the limited resources on Earth.

Apparently that won't become mainstream too soon since it's too expensive:

It currently costs around $384,000 to produce one hamburger.

In my view, mass production is inevitable at some point in the future once scientists get a good grasp of the process. Definitely interesting to see how this will play out.

What do you guys think? Would you eat man-made meat? Is it going to become mainstream or it will remain just a scientific experiment?

Probably going to become mainstream and get commercialized if costs are reasonable, or develop into an expensive fad like frozen yogurt.

You can never tell with these things, they're always years and years away anyways. Whatever, if they can engineer a healthier burger that tastes better, give it to me.

Calm down.

We've been able to grow protein for a while. It's just not cost-effective at all right now.

So an unsuspecting customer at some burger joint is going to chow down on a $384,000 burger? Forget the taste, I want to know their reaction when they hear how much money they just ate.
