I should preface that I had a mad crush on this individual for a period of time so do take this with a grain of salt.

We worked together for about 3 years from when he was an Associate to VP (I was his analyst). He was the single most technical associate I have ever met, but also the single most well-liked, socially affluent, charming and charismatic person i have ever met. The MDs adored him, and would frequently bring him along to client meetings abroad without the ED/VP.

This guy would always crack jokes in the office and create a super pleasant atmosphere. This guy would stay well past midnight to split work with the analysts / teach them even if he had been getting railed for weeks. When he was a VP he would even financially incentivise a couple of analysts (he gave me $10,000 in cash after we had closed a very big deal, even though our firm already does profit sharing)

This guy apparently came from a super humble upbringing as well. All he did in his free time is read books and run marathons - it was actually insane. He was also so intrinsically motivated. He wanted to go into politics in the long run and saw finance as a stepping stone to it, and was clearly not doing it for the money / prestige.

He ended up leaving to a top buyside job, and his departure is honestly the single biggest reason I left as well. It was so bizzare how much ‘key person risk’ that work environment had even when the guy was so junior. I’m certain he will be one of Bill Ackmans or Orlando Bravos of the next 10-15 years.

I interned with an associate who was an army vet. He was a super chill guy and he told us how he had a really hard time transitioning to civilian life but eventually rode the roller coaster of life into college then IB.

Rumor was that he was some Jason Bourne secret operative type because he was an absolute animal and no one could actually confirm having seen him asleep.

In all seriousness though, such a cool guy with a wild story and he was a pleasure to work with.

You guys are painting a ridiculously rosy picture. Four and a half years in the job and it still absolutely stinks. Toxic culture everywhere, on call 24/7 for the dumbest shit with no understanding of when comments are going to come or how late you should wait up. Working on holidays and stupid office politics and ass kissing.

The alleged upside over the course of a career is worth it, of course. But don’t tell people it’s not “that bad” when you know it’s a horrible experience. Sure it’s not being in a concentration camp? Nobody ever said that it was. But you’re basically working 2 full time 9-5 jobs, except now everyone around you is an asshole who doesn’t respect your time and you have to deal with the fragile egos of senior bankers, who have their entire personality and self worth tied directly to their job.
