I'm the same way. As much as it sounds like stupid snowflake rhetoric, I must have some sort of music playing to work effectively. If it's silent, I'll meander around WSO, Reddit, and other internet pits.

When I look for background music to listen to while working, I gravitate towards fast paced where the words don't matter much. If it's vocal focused, I tend to latch on more to the music rather than the actual work.

  • My go-to is Kid Cudi. Spotify has a great feature that after the album plays, it'll go into a Kid Cudi radio that seamlessly continues the noise.
  • A sneaky good one is The Social Network Soundtrack - a little slower paced but still great.
  • Pop/punk from the early 2000's - New Found Glory, Modest Mouse, Bayside, Senses Fail, etc
  • This goes against my non-vocal focus but Watsky is a great way to break it up. I first learned of him when I went through a spoken-word poetry phase years back (don't ask - it was a weird time). He's an amazing lyricist with catchy songs that you'll find yourself humming on your commute home.

There's tons of other songs/artists/genres but this is one of my internet pits taking away from actual money making work right now...

Lofi Hip Hop playlists on spotify or youtube. The one by chilledcow is always good.

I also bump EDM sometimes so I can be hype as fuck when doing mindless work.

Dayman?

It's like the single type of music thats good for everything. I use it for working, driving, exercising, falling to sleep, and fuggin (got several compliments on it from ladies over the years).

Dayman?

Hardcore/Punk [Counterparts, Jesus Piece, Vanna (old), Harms way, Code Orange] if I really need to concentrate or fight sleep.

Soft pop/hiphop/moody stuffy [LANY, Joan, Charlotte Lawrence, 6LACK, Majid Jordan, aftertheparty, etc.] especially helpful for repetitive tasks.

Piano music or cello-heavy classical [various spotify playlists] early mornings.

Maybe I'm stuck in the past using Pandora with Spotify Premium and Apple Music out now, but The Magician Radio channel always works for me. Light, good pace, minimal vocals, easy listening for grinding.

Super eclectic on my side:

Used to listen a lot to Infected Mushroom - an Israeli psytrance duo. Was recommended it by a former manager and ended up listening to it straight through uni for revision.

Have recently become a big fan of synthwave (loads of generic playlists on YouTube): very 1980s vibe; find it slightly less intense than IM and, I find, is just good for background.
