Nice Parts of Brooklyn?
I'm looking for a place that meets the following criteria.
-2 bedroom/1 bathroom
-Less than $1800 per month
-Less than 25 minutes away from the Financial District and/or Gramercy Park by subway
-Relatively safe
-Lots of bars and young people nearby without the presence of an excessive number of hipsters
Is this possible?
I would say it is indeed rather impossible to find a place that satisfies all your listed criteria, especially the last one: "-Lots of bars and young people nearby without the presence of an excessive number of hipsters"--whatever excessive means.
The nicer/more yuppified parts of Brooklyn are not any cheaper than Manhattan. In fact recently people have been priced out of Williamsburg into the East Village, shocking as it may sound.
Dead on.
But seriously, I'm flexible on most of the criteria and welcome all recommendations.
For a one bedroom, yes. Probably not the answer you want though. Unfortunately, moving to the nicer parts of Brooklyn and not finding hipsters, is like going to China and not running into Chinese.
I've heard Sunset Park is pretty cheap. Will I get shot if I live there?
If you don't mind taking a (short) ferry to financial district, take a look at Red Hook. Not sure if you can get under $1800, but you might get close. Other than that, you're gonna have to shell out more $$$.
Brooklyn always has plenty of hipsters, unavoidable. Most of NYC is pretty safe.
not impossible. the area that has recently been deemed "BoCoCa". Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens. Boerum and Cobble actually have a pretty decent night life too on Smith and Court streets. $1800 for a 2-bd isn't exactly par for the course, but I know of a few people who each pay around $1000 per month in 3 or 4 bedroom apartments. So on a per-person basis, it roughly equals what you're looking for. Also, on the A and F lines, which you can get to FiDi (by A) in around 15 minutes.
Why is it so God damn difficult to find a room for rent in BoCoCa? Anyone know a good roommate website? $1000/person per month a 4 bedroom apartment sounds perfect.
Now I just need to find roommates or a room available with people that aren't a bunch of buzz killingtons. Preferably people in their early to mid 20's.
i'd avoid carroll gardens though. not cuz it's bad - just a little more family-oriented than boerum and cobble. as with any affordable, but not crappy, part of nyc (except for murray hill maybe), there are going to be college students, artists, and even a couple of hipsters. deal with it.
like someone said, bococa.
Also, i'd look at park slope around 5th ave. 5th ave has a ton of great bars, is still pretty affordable (especially after the barclays center), completely safe, and is really close to the R train (stops through lower manhattan). i've lived in the area for a few years and love it.
Bococa? Really?
Really?
Ha you beat me to it. Guess the New New York with all its neologisms and avant garde abbreviations is just too hip for us old timers.
