NYC Rent Prices! What now?

The goal for many an ambitious student with financier dreams is to move to his corner of the Empire city that is Murray Hill- a paradise of people just like him. Like when squidward goes to squadville.

Back in the day, all of a year ago now, a nice somewhat sturdy flex wall and a good flat mate meant rent of under $2k. Studios under $2k were even available across the city.

Now, rent prices have r abounded from covid lows to above pre covid at a vicious rate.

You could always move to Chicago and have cheaper rent up in wrigleyville, but hell… that’s the equivalent of deep Brooklyn.

Salary increases are nice but rent must be destructive to those in S&T and research that once were held to the same tier as IB!

And still, it must hurt using that new raise to pay for rent that makes your raise seem like not much of a raise at all!!!

So my question is,

Where to live in NYC now?

Is Brooklyn a move or still a frowned upon shadowy realm of hipsters partying outside the club of Manhattan because they can’t get in?

East Village

Midtown West & Upper East Side. Been looking and difficult to find any respectable 1bd under 4k. It’s a different world out there and not guaranteed when prices will come back down. Occupancy is near 100% in many buildings.

Some brokers speak of rents coming down this year as those who signed COVID deals decide to move out when they can no longer afford the concession free rent. Some other brokers say to jump on deals asap as some Covid-era deals signed for 24months and summer is coming up which will drive prices up even higher as supply remain low and demand increases

Midtown West and UES are boorrringgg

Jersey. (ducks) Seriously you can get a lot of $60 cab rides for the rent difference and you're skipping the 3.5% city tax too.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Is a 40 minute commute really worth it? Plus all the places near the path stations have gone up 50% yoy

20 min to WTC, and my rent increased 4% this year.
