New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan Played 'Kingmaker' for Pope Leo

Story by Jessica McBride

A New York Cardinal, Timothy Dolan, was instrumental in the election of Robert Prevost to be Pope Leo XIV.

According to il Giornale, an Italian-language news site, the Chicago-born Prevost was not initially the favorite to be the next Pope. That honor was accorded to an Italian cardinal named Pietro Parolin, the site reported.

What changed? Dolan, the former archbishop of Milwaukee, WI.

According to il Giornale, the outgoing Dolan played "kingmaker." In rallying support for the first American Pope, Dolan rallied support for Prevost from cardinals affiliated with the "old British empire," especially those cardinals who speak English, the site reported,

Parolin had a group of supporters but not enough to reach a quorum, the site reported, and two other cardinals divided others. Meanwhile, Prevost was gathering support "in the shadows," according to il Giornale.

After the first vote, Prevost began to draw support from African and Asian cardinals, according to the site.

Dolan spoke about the new Pope to CNN's Erin Burnett.

“Exhausting. That’s a good sense,” he said of how he was feeling.

“We’ve been at it pretty full time for the last 2.5 weeks.”

Dolan said that “a lot of times all we get is bleak, somber news about the church."

He said there’s an “explosion of hope and promise and unity" around Pope Leo. According to Dolan, people throughout the world viewing the white smoke surpassed the viewership of the World Cup.

“You could feel it,” he said, adding tha the received a lot of emails and phone calls from people expressing solidarity.

He said he knew of Prevost but thought he was a “peripheral” candidate at first.

“I didn’t kind of really zero in on him until I showed up at the congregation meetings,” after the funeral of Pope Francis, Dolan revealed. He said that people started asking Dolan about Prevost because he was born in the U.S.

He said he didn’t know Prevost but what he knew was “pretty stellar.”

At that point, he started getting to know Prevost better.

Conclaves have been “usually two, maybe three days,” he said.

“There must have bene somewhat of a unity or agreement from when they went in,” he said of the cardinals.

Pope Leo XIV's motto and coat of arms - Vatican News

Pope Leo XIV reveals his coat of arms and motto, which clearly reflect his Augustinian roots.

By Vatican News

Pope Leo XIV's coat of arms offers a clear reflection of his Augustinian roots and the values he seeks to promote during his pontificate, particularly unity and communion within the Church.

The shield is divided diagonally into two sections. The upper half features a blue background with a white lily.

The lower half of the shield has a light background and displays an image that recalls the Order of Saint Augustine: a closed book with a heart pierced by an arrow. This is a direct reference to the conversion experience of Saint Augustine himself, who described his personal encounter with God’s Word using the phrase: “Vulnerasti cor meum verbo tuo” - “You have pierced my heart with your Word.”

The motto

Pope Leo XIV has also chosen a motto that reflects this Augustinian tradition: In Illo uno unum, which means “In the One, we are one.” The phrase is taken from Saint Augustine’s Exposition on Psalm 127, where he explains that “although we Christians are many, in the one Christ we are one.”

In a 2023 interview with Vatican News' Tiziana Campisi, then-Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost spoke about the significance of this motto: “As can be seen from my episcopal motto, unity and communion are truly part of the charism of the Order of Saint Augustine, and also of my way of acting and thinking,” he said. “I believe it is very important to promote communion in the Church, and we know well that communion, participation, and mission are the three key words of the Synod. So, as an Augustinian, for me promoting unity and communion is fundamental.”

Saint Augustine’s reflection on Psalm 127 highlights the theological foundation of this idea. “Christ - head and body - is one single man. And what is the body of Christ? His Church,” Augustine writes. He then adds, “Although we Christians are many, in the one Christ we are one. We are many and we are one - because we are united to Him, and if our Head is in heaven, the members will follow.”

It's too early to tell. His background as the prior general of the Augustinian Order and prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops shows that he's got a good handle one the more administrative side. He seems like a more true moderate that was a compromise between the traditionalist wing and the more progressive guys.

Pope Leo XIV invites world leaders, enemies to meet face-to-face

(NewsNation) — Pope Leo XIV is calling for world leaders and their enemies to meet face-to-face.

Pope Leo XIV sent out the call for the interaction in his first tweets on Wednesday since being named the 267th leader of the Catholic Church last week.

“The Holy See is willing to help enemies meet, so they may look each other in the eye and so people may be given back the dignity they deserve: the dignity of peace,” he said on social media platform X. “With heart in hand, I say to the leaders of nations: let us meet; let us dialogue; let us negotiate!”

Bringing peace is a bad thing?

I've tried to sit back on this topic for a bit before commenting.   I can't get a good feel for the pope yet, but my opinions on Cardinal Dolan are less than positive.  this is going to be the fourth (or less) Pope in most of our lifetimes.

JP2 was a caretaker: don't mess with the church too much, keep things going as a bastion of normalcy in a messed up world

Benedict was a staunch traditionalist, poorly selected and poor for the time. Hitler Youth connections didn't help either.

Francis was the first Pope from MY order and admittedly by everyone a d--- good guy. breaking norms to cater to the poor?  Yeah.  Coming from an order that eschews personal possessions, then refusing to sleep in the papal chambers because they were too lavish? yeah.

New guy? We'll see

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

He seems like a good guy so far.

I take some issue with this representation of Francis. I think Francis was really into showing everyone just how humble he was i.e. not sleeping in papal chambers, wearing more plain clothes, washing feet of migrants etc.

On the other hand, he was very worldy and a master at politicking in the Vatician placing his favorites in positions and punishing those that disagreed with him. He seemed to overweigh his focus toward issues favored by the elite: LGBT, women in the church, Latin mass, environmentalism, etc. Basically, things that the average poor person does not give a shit about.

So in my opinion, on the one hand, he was a really good guy who cared about the poor but you look at the things that he focused on, he kind of wasn't the champion of the poor that he could have been.

I really hope that the new pope will be about more than just washing feet and will be attentive to the poor and the church especially in places like South America where participation has fallen off a cliff in the past 20 years despite an Argentinian pope. So far love the new guy! Seems like a really good guy who doesn't have to show you every two seconds what a really good guy he is.

Funniest

Seems like a good guy. Hilarious seeing MAGA get all worked up about him. If they think the Pope is “woke,” wait until they hear about what this Jesus Christ guy was saying.

If you think Jesus Christ was woke I don't think you've ever opened a Bible in your life. This is the most empty-headed cope from liberals who spent decades publicly deriding Christianity to then turn around and pretend "actually Jesus would've totally agreed with us". It's no coincidence the vast majority of church-going Christians in the country are Republican.
