"The North Korean fire came as the South's military conducted routine drills in waters off the island, which is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the North."

10km is pretty close to be conducting military drills from someone else's shores... I am not trying to defend NKorea in any way, but they are the world's equivalent to the really psycho loner that everyone knew back in high school, and fucking with them for shits and giggles is never a smart idea. Isn't there a shitload of water around SKorea to do these routine military drills? Why give them any reason to justify being batshit crazy to themselves?

drexelalum11It's a disputed border. Considering the DMZ is only 4km wide, 10km from the border is a pretty reasonable buffer by Korean standards.

Yeah, considering 10km from North Korea's border is SOUTH KOREA!

North Korea does this shit all the time, just because they know they can get away with it. It's like a skinny kid picking on a fat kid. The skinny kid can get away with it for a while because the fat kid can't catch him...but one day the skinny kid is going to do/say something while within reach of the fat kid and the skinny kid is going to get crushed.

Ok, bad analogy, but the point is, North Korea has nothing to lose. Their country is in shambles and their people are literally starving to death so they can do this shit and get away with it because the south is afraid to retaliate in too big of a manner for fear of escalating the situation to a full blown war.

NKorea is like that super drunk guy at a bar, picking a fight with everything including the table. No one chooses to mess with him because they know its not worth it. Does anyone remember when Bush was President, NKorea came out and said they had WMDs and were ready to throw down? But the US was so focused on the ME that we didn't even care (at least outwardly).

This is all part of their scheme to be paid off by the U.S.... again. Last week's nuclear tour and this week's attack. They know we'll bribe the hell out of them to keep a war from commencing.

And with nuclear capabilities... regardless, their incompetent leader and minuscule armed forces... they have plenty of leverage to force our hand.

What are you talking about?!?

"North Korea has the highest percentage of military personnel per capita of any nation in the world, with approximately 1 enlisted soldier for every 25 citizens.[81] Military strategy is designed for insertion of agents and sabotage behind enemy lines in wartime,[80] with much of the KPA's forces deployed along the heavily fortified Korean Demilitarized Zone. The Korean People's Army operates a very large amount of equipment, including 4,060 tanks, 2,500 APCs, 17,900 artillery pieces (incl. mortars), 11,000 air defence guns in the Ground force; at least 915 vessels in the Navy and 1,748 aircraft in the Air Force,[82] as well as some 10,000 MANPADS and anti-tank guided missiles.[83] The equipment is a mixture of World War II vintage vehicles and small arms, widely proliferated Cold War technology, and more modern Soviet weapons."
