Prep/Ivy/Trad Fashion is Dead?

Hey I attend an ivy and haven't seen anyone wearing Prep/Ivy/Trad outfits like how you see in movies and Brooks Brothers catalogs, which is surprising given the historical association of this style with Ivy League schools. The rich kids are wearing more designer flashy brands, or just a hoddie. What's going on? Is this the end of prep/ivy/trad style as we know it?

It hurts because it's true.

I used to dress preppy all of the time (as y'all would say, Vineyard Vines and Lilly Pulitzer was my shit). Regularly wore dresses to class and sweatpants were hardly a part of my college wardrobe.

I think there was a shift away from the already-declining pretty style at the beginning of 2020 as way, way fewer people were wearing preppy styles by FW2020-2021. TikTok-inspired and fast-fashion outfits seemed to be all the rage (Think sweats and cheap clothes, but make it fashion, but for real).

The really rich kids all seemed to tend toward flashy brands and rare items (Bottega Veneta bags and Gucci sneakers) or the expensive but non-traditionally-luxury brands (Golden Goose sneakers or Canada Goose jackets) and higher-end brands (Lululemon leggings (or pants for the guys, which shockingly seemed to be really popular) and higher-end flannels and shackets).

Out were the Vineyard Vines, Lilly Pulitzer, and Brooks Brothers, in were the new brands. Today, even for me, preppy dress seems to be a thing of yesteryear. When I see it today, it reminds me of simpler times.

I think the posters above hit it right on the mark, Covid lockdowns + TikTok have massively changed culture -- 99% for the worse. Not saying preppy culture was necessarily 'the best of culture,' it's just one example of how it's evolved.

All this Metaverse stuff / new evolutions of anime / next-level gaming experiences / social media proliferation (TikTok, IG --> many more coming over next 5yrs) -- while in some ways exciting, having been on the investor side of the table and having spoken at length on the topic from leading investors in the space (i.e. a16z), multiple folks have conveyed 'I sure as hell wouldn't want to live in this new world but if it's happening anyway, might as well make some money off it'

J. Press, Alden and Turnbull & Asser will always be in style. Disagree? Sorry but you’re wrong.

Only new money thinks Bergdorf offerings are a status symbol. No better way to tell people you have zero taste than wearing that kind of trash.

Don’t worry. Those guys wearing designer will one day wake up and realize how absurd they looked. Or they’ll wear that nonsense in an office setting. Likely the same guy that’s over 30 and talks about how they played college lax. Not a great look.

Or… you could just not care.

But, truthfully, I missed when people actually respected the tradition and knew the finer nuance of Harris Tweed.

It does my heart so much good to see my fellow proponents of traditional sartorialism. My blue-blooded, somewhat haughty great-grandmother (Requiescant in Pace) would've been very proud of you.

Within the US? Probably fading away outside of the prep school circles.

It's still a big thing amongst Dutch Frat Boy/Sorority Girl Types... For some reason, they all dress like they came straight out of Ralph Lauren or Brooks Brothers catalogue.

I actually see well dressed people in the East Coast when I went to visit.
