Rock You Like A Hurricane

So how bad is this thing going to be exactly? I went grocery shopping after the gym tonight and noticed people stocking up their carts with water and other junk. I also noticed that my cart had three cans of spaghettios and two bags of beef jerky in it, so it's not like I'm too worried, but at the same time I feel like I should ask if there is anything else I need in order to survive this weekend?

My unit has been activated and deployed to North Carolina along with a bunch of others. I don't know how bad its going to be but the last couple times they've done this it hasn't been a little storm.

Does that mean you're going too? Sorry, I don't know how that works exactly.

blastoiseHow bad do think subway will get flooded?

They are totally shutting down the MBTA because they think subways will flood, and are trying to evacuate half of the city.

The rats will be swarming out of the subways.

The fact that everyone's running around shrieking and panicking isn't helping at all. It'll be intense, but anytime somethnig like this happens everyone thinks it's the end of the world. Same thing with the earthquake--i bet the Californians and the Japanese and laughing at us right now!

Reuters"Apparently a New York Metropolitan Transit Authority official is speculating that subway tunnel flooding could drive millions of rats above ground. Something else to keep an eye on, I guess."

Yeah....have fun with that.

Anyone in Zone A that's doing anything extra?

I feel like for tri-state areas (unless you're in a flood zone, coastal regions, or long island), it's really blown out of proportion.

To answer the question, focus on the survival basics- food, water, shelter, heat, and security. Unless you already have enough food stores to last a least a week, I would recommend you buy no-preparation foodstuffs in waterproof packaging- make sure you know how many people you will need to support. Make sure you have a clean water supply that can last you 1 to 2 weeks- frankly, you can drink it once this is over. Presumably, you have a place to stay- assess to see if it is susceptible to flooding and make take/make the proper precautions. Who knows what the temperature will be like after the rain- it could be muggy, or it could be cold and cloudy- have the appropriate clothing/bedding for both. The government is already believes there is strong possibility electrical power will be knocked out for several day- charge up your Kindle tonight so you have something to do. If you have a cell phone, charge it so you can get information as to what is happening. Security, well- it speaks for itself. No one ever regretted having the means to defend themselves. We've all seen the riots videos and looting from Watts to New Orleans to London- don't be a victim. Now, that last sentence might read a little crazy, but it makes no sense to not consider the need to protect oneself should the authorities not be available. Remember, this is New York (if that is where you are) - this city is largely unprepared should the worse happen- a Category 1 or 2 could be the equivalent to a Category 5 in the Gulf.

You want to make this, or any other event, as survivable as possible. And, if you are ahead of the curve, you can even put some efforts into comforts- hand generators for charging your iPhone/iPod, etc- although, if you are asking about whether to prepare or not less than 36 hours before the event, you probably don't have time for that.

To summarize, it can't hurt to prepare. It is nearly always better to overestimate and have a surplus then underestimate and come up short.

Bear Grylls is that you??

Zone A is under mandatory evacuation now so I'm heading to my girlfriend's place in midtown. I honestly don't think it is necessary but better to be safe than sorry.

AviatorWait, so is this going to hit manhattan ? My fridge is empty, I hope everything isn't shut over the weekend.

You should NOT be relying on Seamless to be up and running. You might want to go grab some granola bars or something, lol.
