SA London, should I commute and work from home or go into the office

The bank I am interning at this summer is heavy on wfh, with 2 days minimum required in the office. The role isn't IB as such but along the corp banking and capital markets area. I live a 2-hour train journey away from London so commuting every day makes no time or financial sense. Additionally, finding a place for a short summer stay for a decent price is also very hard (my internship isn't paying IB wages).

I want to be in the office every day and attend all the events, but if the bank itself is pushing wfh. Is the smart thing just to commute for 3 days and stay at a friend's house for a day or 2, and wfh on Fridays etc?

commuting into London can be a pain in the ass at the best of times, I'd recommend getting a place within London

saves you time + exposes you to more opportunity - at this stage of your career that's arguably the most important thing you can do (increase opportunities)

Agree with some of the posts above - definitely look at moving into London, for two major reasons:

First, I think living outside London might encourage you to do the minimum in-office days but if you want to maximise chance of return offer then give yourself the flexibility to come in as much as possible when the team is in (obviously working hard is more important but managers/directors take note of this trust me)

Second, living in London is so much fun in your first year. Colleagues who don’t live in London hate the commute home after a long day, particularly if you’re having work drinks or seeing friends, you won’t be able to have that same flexibility and enjoyment

TLDR: Live in London it gives you flexibility in your life

Hope this helps
