Searching for NYC FT Roommate

Hey all, I'm an incoming private credit analyst in NYC starting in August looking for 1-3 roommates. Not very picky on location, but thinking about living in Murray Hill, East Village, Kips Bay, LES, Turtle Bay and spend about $2000-2500 per month on rent.

Some info about me:

Gender: Male

Hobbies: basketball, boxing / UFC, golf, poker

Looking for roommates with whom I can be friends with, explore the city with / go out on weekends (when I can). Feel free to comment or pm

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and tips for your NYC roommate search:

  1. Popular Neighborhoods for Analysts:

    • Murray Hill and Gramercy are highly recommended for young professionals, especially those working in finance. Rent for shared apartments in these areas typically ranges from $1,500 to $2,250 per person, depending on the size and quality of the apartment.
    • East Village and Lower East Side (LES) are great for nightlife and a younger vibe, though they might be slightly pricier. Expect to pay closer to the upper end of your budget here.
    • Kips Bay and Turtle Bay are quieter but still close to Midtown offices, offering a balance between affordability and convenience.
  2. Budget Considerations:

    • With a budget of $2,000-$2,500, you should be able to find a decent shared apartment in these neighborhoods. If you're open to roommates, you can save significantly compared to renting a studio or 1-bedroom alone.
  3. Roommate Dynamics:

    • Many analysts in NYC prefer having roommates during their first few years. It helps save money and provides a built-in social network, especially when you're new to the city.
    • Your hobbies like basketball, boxing/UFC, golf, and poker could be great conversation starters when connecting with potential roommates.
  4. Tips for Finding Roommates:

    • Post on forums like WSO's roommate threads or other finance-related communities. Be clear about your budget, preferred neighborhoods, and move-in date.
    • Consider using apps like Roomi or SpareRoom, which are popular for finding roommates in NYC.
    • Start looking for apartments and roommates at least 1-2 months before your move-in date. NYC apartments move fast, so be ready to act quickly.
  5. Additional Costs:

    • Be prepared for upfront costs like the first and last month's rent, a security deposit, and potentially a broker's fee (usually 15% of the annual rent). For a $2,000/month apartment, this could total around $8,000-$9,000 upfront.
