I am a Muslim in finance (not really a practicing one), but I identify as one in blood, culture, and name. I am not an avid reader of history, but one civilization that has always attracted my interest (in a good way) is the Jewish diaspora. Not only because some of its beliefs are very similar to the Muslim culture, but also because I feel that this is a civilization which has constantly punched above its weight and has been darn successful at it (that may have turned other communities jealous). I am genuinely curious and want to pose a couple of questions to all the Jews who inhabit or visit this forum every now and then.
- Have you as a Jew ever felt marginalized in finance, or do you feel it's worked in your favor? - Why do some folks say that by being a Jew on Wall Street you stand out? Haven't most of the top investment bank and bankers been Jewish? How can being Jewish be a source of disadvantage?
- What opinions do you have of other religious sects (Muslims, Catholics) that also believe in one GOD? Are there some whom you feel more allied with? Are you very pressurized to marry within your own? I am not talking about ultra-religious folks as it's easy to decipher what opinion they may hold, but the educated Jews
Muslim woman here. I thought I'd weigh in on your "allying" with similar religions question. I attended a British Catholic school in Pakistan and came to the US for college. I grew up with people from many different religious backgrounds back home ( Christian, Jewish, Zoroastrian, Hindu, Sikh, other Muslims) and I never really "bonded" with anyone based on shared religion. Shared culture yes (Like I get along with my indian friends really well because we can talk about movies, food, cultural nuances etc) but not really religion. I have best friends from different religious backgrounds, which is great because we learn so much from each other. For the last two years, I've been doing Sabbath with my roommate (she's from a very religious jewish family) every week. I celebrate Passover and Sukkot with her family. My non-Muslim friends remind me about prayer times and always send me goodies for Ramadan 3 They say Salam to my parents/ come over to celebrate Eid with us. Since I went to a catholic school, I am also pretty used to attending Christmas Mass with my friends.
If you're really interested in Jewish culture, I'd recommend watching a show called the Marvelous Mrs Maisel if you haven't already. If you have specific questions about jewish history/ culture/ ethnicity. feel free to send them my way. My roommate and her mom are very knowledgeable about this :)
Very interesting! Thank you for chiming in. Have never bonded with anyone over religion myself, but I was just curious.
BTW -- I also grew up in Pakistan btw and came to the US for college. I went to Aitchison and I presume based on your description, you went to Convent of Jesus and Mary? :)
