Spending 40k on a watch is crazy?

27 and will end up making a little above 1m this year. For reference, I have around 500k in my brokerage, 200k in retirement, 200k in savings. Car and other watches total around 60k or so if liquidated. FWIW this is my 4th year now working

I may make a bit more by the end of the year but up in the air.

Is spending 40k on a watch crazy right now?

A lot of people have $40K watches. I personally just like my Garmin fenix. $40K also doesn't sound insane when comparing to a watch that costs $1M.

I'd also rather put $40K towards a $100K car like a Lotus Emira.

An Emira with the 3.5L and a manual would be an incredible car to get, while they still make cars like that.

Yeah!!!

Eh, probably. But also, who cares? Life is short. I have a A. Lange & Söhne on my eventual list. If you can afford it, maybe sit on the decision for a couple months, see if you still want that specific model, and then pull the trigger. I’ve absolutely had to have things that I’m glad I didn’t buy a few months after.

Also, make sure you’re actually going to wear it. I’ve bought a couple watches that are brilliant but I ultimately got rid of because they spent 99% of their time in the case.

Spending 40K on a watch is and is not crazy. What are you looking at? This is the first question. The second question is how much do you make?

Buying a Rolex for 40K is prob insane, buying a Patek for 40K is much less so.

I like the all gold Rolex - it is $42.5K. Also there are some AP's in that range that are nice.

It's just that Rolex's are generally priced higher than their long term market value than other watches given the more public knowledge of the brand.

What are you doing that you’re making $1mm at 27?

It’s not crazy but also not the most prudent. If you said net worth was higher, I’d say for sure do it. And your net worth will get higher quick at this rate. I personally have more of a save/invest as quick as possible mindset. I’m around $1mm NW with lower income than you and debating upgrading my citizens watch for a $7k Rolex. Somewhere in the middle of our two mindsets is probably the right one

Edit: misread your net worth, thought it was $500k not $900k. I’d still be hesitant. Maybe 1-2% of net worth seems reasonable. But you could also just set aside a separate account for watches / splurges and set aside income into that and have plenty saved very quickly for it

I would want more savings before doing that. What happens if you lose your job and are out of work for a year? Is your retirement in the shitter now? The more savings you have the more you can spend. It really shouldn’t be tied to income.

I think that’s reasonable given your net worth. Get the watch if you think you’ll love it and wear it. I got a Grand Seiko with my first bonus because it was my dream watch forever. Ironically “saved” me some money because I haven’t bought another watch for two years now. Used to spend $2K a year on a handful of OK watches, but my taisetsu spring drive has finally satisfied my interest.

Personally have about $10K of watches and a $10K motorcycle, not a huge portion of my net worth.

If you can afford and it and you want it, then no, it isn't too much.  I will say - get the fucking thing insured, or put on your renters/homeowners insurance!

It is highly likely that people you know will judge you for buying it and wearing a 40k watch on your wrist.  And they will be no less wrong to judge your choices than you are for making them.  If you're comfortable with that, go wild.  If you think it looks like overly conspicuous consumption, maybe dial it back

There’s going to be people on here that will tell you $40k on a watch is too much no matter how much you make, could be $1MM, $100MM, doesn’t matter, they were brought up under a different culture and don’t share the same values as us.

If it genuinely makes you happy, go for it. Assuming you live in New York, you don’t need to spend money on a car, and a watch will retain much better value than a car people who only make $200k a year will overspend on to be flashy. I’ve seen women who foolishly spend their savings on $40k+ worth of bags from Chanel and Hermes when they make less than $150k a year and don’t even have a man supporting them. You can actually afford the splurge with what you’re making and not have it make a significant dent on your finances assuming your pay is still on an upwards trajectory at 27 years old.

I’ve also seen guys making half of what you make in their 30s-40s wasting more money per year on first class flights and flashy hotels or bottle service so they have something to post on IG. You’ll be fine.

With your current savings and knowing you can probably recoup a majority of the cost if you decide to resell it later (assuming you choose the right brand/model), go wild man. You're only young once and you can't spend money when you're dead. Just be prepared to think to yourself in 3-4 years "god I was so dumb why did I spend that money on this thing".

In the world of watches 40k definetley isn't abnormal for a watch. Personally I've never been one to look at watches like their an "investment" so this  a bad choice from a fiscally responsible point. That being said, you did make a million dollars and looks like you're pretty good at your job so you're pretty set for the next year. Buy the watch and maybe cut down on bottle service every night and reservations at 4 Charles Prime Rib. Or don't. This is America, after all.

Totally reasonable. I collect high end independents though...lol.

What is your favorite watch, how much did you pay for it and what is it worth?

Watches tell time. Any value beyond that is personal. If it will bring you happiness or the appropriate social signal, do it. Also, please give career advice lol.

Idk man, this spiel is usually reserved for tradesmen thinking about buying a brand new truck after getting their first paycheck, but I think it applies here: 40k might not sound like a lot, especially when you're making bank, but you're young, so you'll be very glad you stashed it away when you're 45 and it's worth 150k.

Keep in mind that the day will come when you'll hate your high-paying job and you'll want to spend your time doing something less lucrative.  Keep in mind also that no job is 100% stable, and that the party could end at any point.

I don't know shit about watches, maybe it would end up being a good investment, but...the watch will lose its appeal after a couple of years, money never will.

Either 40k or 10 bucks, no middle ground allowed.

My middle ground is the Garmin fenix. I love that watch. Was $900 in 2018. Still going strong.
