Teaser Tuesday! February 18, 2014

Time for another Teaser Tuesday! Good luck!

Note: If you could all please input your answers using the previously noted html code it will allow others to answer without having a spoiler. Also, in your answer, do not include any ' or " or it will not work properly.

Question 1

You have two coconuts and you want to find out how high they can be dropped from a 100 story building before they break. But you only have $1.50 and the elevator costs a dime each time you ride it. How can you drop the coconuts to guarantee you will find the lowest floor they will break at, while starting and ending at floor 1?

Note: They break when dropped from the same height and they don't weaken from getting dropped.

Question 2

There are 3 black hats and 2 white hats in a box. Three men (we will call them Tom, Bob, and Bill) each reach into the box and place one of the hats on his own head. They cannot see what color hat they have chosen. The men are situated in a way that Tom can see the hats on Bob and Bill's heads, Bob can only see the hat on Bill's head and Bill cannot see any hats. When Tom is asked if he knows the color of the hat he is wearing, he says no. When Bob is asked if he knows the color of the hat he is wearing he says no. When Bill is asked if he knows the color of the hat he is wearing he says yes and he is correct. What color hat and how can this be? There is no play on words and there are no tricks.

Enjoy!

Question 1 --> first go to floor 15 and drop first coconut. If it breaks, you can afford to try 1-14 in that order. if it doesnt break, try floor (f[t-1]) - n, where f[t-1] is previous floor attempted and n is number of attempted drops. try floors 15, 29, 42, 54, 65, 75, 84, 92, and 99. once the first coconut breaks you can afford to try every floor starting with the largest successful drop floor and working your way up to the unsuccessful drop.

Question 2 --> his hat must be BLACK. If Tom saw two white hats he would know he was wearing black, so Bob and Bill have either black/black, black/white, or white/black. If BOB [middle man] saw bill in a white hat, he would know he is wearing black because Tom was unsure what he was wearing and our answer pool has been reduced. Becasue Bob was unsure, it must suggest Bill is wearing black

The answer buttons also don't work in my chrome. To see the answers in chrome, I right click the buttons people post and click "Inspect Element," which should bring up the HTML code of the page and highlights the code of the button. You can see the answers in that code. When you're done, just click the "x" in the top right of the pop-up. Enjoy!

A "ride" is both up and down. I realize that's a tad ambiguous in the teaser. Hopefully that clears it up for everyone!
