The curious case of digital business card
Last year, I was about to search "digital vision board" and typed digital visi - and digital visiting card appeared in the search suggestions. Hmm, what is that, like a digital business card of some kind? Interesting. The next step, the best digital business card reviews search, and voila - there I was, picking a solution and creating the card. This is actually how I discovered them.
So, I created a digital business card but also printed a batch of paper cards with a QR code. I figured it could not hurt to have both, as some folks still prefer the traditional way of doing things.
So, l was at the conference last month, and I ran out of paper cards. Started talking to this guy in his early forties. At some point, of course, I suggested we exchange business cards and reached for my phone, explaining I don't have any more paper cards. His level of shock was as if I was an alien offering to give him a ride in my spaceship.
And don't get me wrong, I am not trying to mock this guy, it was actually quite refreshing getting such an honest reaction from someone you see for the first time. I am simply surprised mostly because of his age and the fact it's not his first conference that he has never heard of these.
Moving forward, same conference, I started a conversation with this middle-aged lady in a fairly high position at her company. Same thing, I explain I'm out of paper cards and take my phone to share my digital card. And she goes - what do you think, that I'll let you send me a virus and get my credit card information? So, now it was my turn to get shocked. I mean, how do you even respond to something like this?
All this got me thinking, how often do people offer to share their digital cards with you? In my case, it's really common, I get the, all the time, so maybe I'm not objective. I'm just trying to wrap my mind around these two stories. I don't expect everyone to have a digital business card, but I really thought people were at least familiar with its existence.
It's been some months since I created mine, so I can't say this is not fairly new for me. I would say it happens to me more often than not to see one added to an email signature. Talking about in-person sharing, I neglected networking a little this year, so didn't really have that many chances to exchange business cards. However, in a remote meeting we had this month, a couple of people shared their digital cards. All in all, it happens often enough but I haven't encountered such extreme reactions since I started sharing mine, that much I can tell you. I dare to say what happened to you is a rare exception, it's just funny that you had two of these practically at the same time.
What can I say, it seems I'm a magnet for bizarre stuff in general. By the way, going to Boston these days to attend another conference. I sincerely hope I won't have anything interesting to share when I come back. And needless to say in the meantime I printed a new batch of paper cards. Better safe than accused of being a vicious hacker.
