Thoughts on going back to the gym?
As COVID restrictions are starting to relax, my gym is planning on opening up soon -- Does anyone live in an area where gyms are already open? Have you been going / how comfortable have you been working out in a gym again? Or will you avoid gyms for a while even when they open? I don't have any weights at home and haven't been able to get in a proper lift in a while so I'm itching to go back, but curious as to what others think given it's a pretty high-risk area for infection.
My gym just reopened... it's strange but ok. People look like they are making more of an effort to wipe down equipment after use - even dumbells and barbells. Much like how I prefer working in the office to working from home, I prefer the gym to a home workout.
What my gym did:
I've been working out at my apartment gym for a few weeks. Pretty much the same as it was before, but people are most conscious about wiping down equipment which is nice.
nope
I go to 5 gyms/fitness centers and 4 are open again.
Its weird/different but ok. My Muay Thai gym is seemingly the same, but we wipe down more. The gyms with machines had some equipment blocked off, but one of the gyms took these off recently and nearly the whole gym is open.
Local gym takes temp, Muay Thai no temp check, Planet Fitness no temp check. Planet fitness still has the best hours for later in the day. Local gym opens at 5am, so I'm completely up and running again basically as far as my workout schedule. 5th place is a resort/tennis center that I go to swim in their pool and they are up and running too, but I just haven't been swimming in a while.
A-race (triathlon - 70.3) is 9/27/20. I'm thinking about some running races maybe in July or August just for some challenges.
Has your Muay Thai gym resumed sparring or close contact like that? I play in a few soccer leagues which have started back up but I'm not super comfortable with that much contact yet. I'm not sure what it'll take for me to be comfortable with it but it just feels too soon at this point.
Yeah we do thai pads and light sparring
"Not super comfortable with that much contact"
If I had a dollar every time a woman said that to Isaiah, I'd be a billionaire. Or, a big black daddy.
Be honest, have you ever set off the lunk alarm at PF?
We need answers! What state are you in Isaiah? I'm in PA currently and gotta find a gym that's open near me.
Never understood how they sell "judgement free zone", but we judge people we don't like.
Yes, I have been told to stop an activity - jump rope. They didn’t set off an alarm though or hit that button. It has happened a few times at different locations.
I'm looking to go as soon as my local Equinox opens up again. Are any of y'all in NYC? Have any of your gyms opened yet?
NYC gyms don't re-open until Phase 3, and we're entering Phase 2 on Monday. So minimum another 2 weeks.
RIP to my closest 24 Hour Fitness (filed BK this week, some closures).
From Europe
We have to disinfect everything after use, every single dumbbell, plates etc. Also have to wear masks when taking a piss and entering the gym. Also a bit of reduced capacity. Ah yes, almost forgot, the people who make your protein shakes have to wear disposable plastic gloves when reaching into the tube to get the powder lmao
I started band resistance training during quaratine, watched a couple of youtube videos and just experimented. Its been a great workout so far, better than I expected, actually have gotten in better shape in some ways.
Not to steal from jurassic park, but, people who workout find a way. Going back to the gym is one thing if you need weights, like a bodybuilder, but I know a lot of people who talk about "needing" the gym but didn't take any time during closures to learn something new. What I'm saying is, people will go back, but only for a sense of feeling normal, if you feel its unsafe, you can definitely find something else.
True that, I kept up my normal gym schedule, just had to swap into resistance bands, body weight and furniture workouts.
I've been going for a few weeks now. I go around 6 am to avoid too many people being there. I'm not too worried even if I catch COVID because I'm in an area with a ton of extra hospital beds and ventilators.
gyms are taking precautions (they were mentioned earlier). I travelled and was able to be in a state that re opened - it was amazing. NYC is overly cautious and people are annoyed. if you want to go to the gym here you should be allowed and if you are scared then just stay at home. it’s not complicated.
you are very likely in a low risk bucket. 50k of the 118k Covid US deaths are nursing homes (excluding nursing home patients that moved to hospitals - strengthens this argument). and given, around 1mm plus nursing home deaths per year that already happen, it’s hard to argue this virus is going to kill you if you take basic precautions. just facts...
when I go to my gym at 6am there’s no people there so it’s honestly better than pre covid
Been every day since opening last week. Feels cleaner. 10/10 recommend going unless you / someone you live with is immunodeficient
My gym has been open for about a month now and I've been going 6 days a week. It's in a state where no one cares. No temperature check ins, no one checks capacity. They give you a squirt bottle and there are paper towels everywhere and you're expected to spray down everything that you use. For the machines most people give it a half-hearted effort. For the weights, no one does anything. I'm pretty cautious about constantly washing my hands, but otherwise no special efforts. Not sick though
