Urgent Appeal to my fellow Chimps

I have been a long-time user and lurker on WSO, but I have set up a second account for the sake of anonymity. Hopefully, the below will explain why.

Having worked in the industry for the past two years prior to returning to uni, I frequented WSO. Both out of interest and to seek advice. I always managed to find something to brighten the long days at the office and, more recently, in the library. I set up a secondary account as I have an appeal that is of a rather sensitive nature.

In short, as a knock-on effect of my mother’s cancer diagnosis, I find myself in a rather difficult position. I know it’s not typically something shared on this forum, but given the support I have received from other members of the community in the past, I thought I would give it a shot.

A little over a year ago, my mother received the devastating diagnosis of stage four cancer. At the time, I was preparing to pursue my postgraduate studies at a well-known Russell Group university. For several months prior, my mother's health had been deteriorating, and despite various medical interventions, we had not anticipated the grim revelation of cancer.

As you can imagine, the news of my mother's diagnosis came as a profound shock to us all. She has always been a resilient and optimistic person, no stranger to physical challenges, but beneath her brave demeanour, I could see she was scared. As an only child I, too, was overwhelmed by the thought of losing her. The spectre of her illness consumed nearly every waking moment. Adding to the weight of the situation, she had been self-employed for the past 25 years, and the diagnosis raised concerns about my mother’s ability to support herself if her condition deteriorated.

Following her diagnosis, the doctors held hope for successful treatment, and my mother commenced her treatment promptly. Unfortunately, their initial efforts proved ineffective, leading to the only option of surgery to remove the cancer and affected areas.

During this time, it became evident that my mother would be unable to work for an extended period. I made the decision to transfer £20,000 from my savings to her to help cover any unforeseen expenses. Fortunately, the surgery was successful, and while it took several months to secure the operation date, the doctors and consultants were pleased with the outcome. I am eternally grateful to everyone who supported and treated my mother, as well as to the advancements in medicine that allowed her to survive.

As anyone familiar with cancer will attest, the journey to remission is a lengthy and arduous one. Now, nearly 18 months after the initial diagnosis, my mother continues to face health challenges due to the scale of her surgery and the severity of her condition. The constant tests, medication adjustments, and examinations have taken a considerable toll on her, yet they are essential for her recovery. This brings me to my appeal. Due to the impact of my mother's illness on my academic pursuits, I recently decided to extend my studies to reduce the academic pressure while assisting at home. However, mounting financial stress has compelled me to launch a fundraising campaign. I currently face a shortfall of nearly £10,000. The funds I had earmarked for my studies were understandably used to cover my mother's expenses during her treatment and inability to work.

I reached out to the university for financial support, but regrettably, I was informed that I did not qualify for aid. The reason cited was that the required amount for my tuition fees was less than what I had previously spent during my time at the university that year. Essentially, the university declined assistance, reasoning that I had chosen to allocate my financial resources to support my mother. While I grapple with their decision, I am resolute in my commitment to complete my studies, so that my mother can witness my graduation from a university I have always aspired to attend.

To address the financial challenges I face, I am currently working two jobs to alleviate the strain, which, unfortunately, further impedes my studies. I am writing this appeal in the hope of raising the £7,600 needed for tuition and £2,400 for accommodation costs to complete my degree. I am deeply grateful for the time you've taken to consider my appeal, and I would greatly appreciate your assistance. If you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to ask in the comments below. I am committed to paying forward any kindness and support that may be extended to me.
