US bipartisan TikTok ban

I mean, I'm all on board. This seems like something we could all definitely get behind- both right and left. I can't think of shittok being a net positive for society in any form. The app is literal cancer, detriments society in countless ways, and also is probably screening your phone for data.

Who in their right mind actually says no to banning tiktok?

I posted once, but it disappeared.

I hope TikTok isn't banned in the US. I really like it and am on it everyday. I mostly post poker videos on there, but also find the app to be highly entertaining.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

"protect Americans by blocking and prohibiting all transactions from any social media company in, or under the influence of, China, Russia, and several other foreign countries of concern,"

What's the difference between this and the great firewall that China has?  I don't think the US can just ban an app for being "cancer" or "detrimental to society".  Wouldn't that violate the first amendment?

Hahah yes I could've used better language and yes I agree would be in violation of 1A but it's not like social media companies haven't done so before... I think the lawmakers are actually more concerned about spying/data than speech.

"The legislation is sponsored by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., with a companion measure introduced in the House by Reps. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., and Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill. The lawmakers said the bill aims to protect Americans from foreign adversaries who might use certain social media to surveil Americans, learn sensitive data about them, and spread influence campaigns or propaganda."    I agree here and see no issue... Tiktok is probably 20-70+% of some peoples media consumption. How lawmakers may go about doing it - if you think this would be a violation of 1A I do see your argument.

If TikTok is misusing American data, why not just ban that behavior?  Using it as a blanket excuse to ban Americans from using any foreign social media site from countries we don't like is overreach in my opinion.  We really shouldn't stoop to China or Russia's level.

Guilty to using snap. Deleted IG back in 2020 with Twitter when you were no longer allowed to tweet what you thought, and I'd definitely say my mental health improved from it. Instagram is a look-at-me competition. I do miss seeing what my friends, favorite artists & athletes are up to though. Recently just got back on Twitter this week to read the Twitter Files. Quite eye-opening for some but some of us knew this was going on for awhile.

Just because social media is bad doesn’t mean you can ban it - that’s authoritarian. If TikTok is a foreign nation stealing our data, then yes, ban it. You can’t just ban stuff you don’t like or think is bad. Who is the government to tell me what to look at on my phone?

Problem w/ this logic is that it increases protectionism everywhere. Why should Asia ex-China let internet companies operate within their borders? You are over time literally changing how another country's citizens think, there's a subtle, but no less important national security threat there

Gov could ban TikTok for national security reasons but they should be prepared for retaliation from other countries that want to preserve their own sovereingty. We're moving towards a more multi-polar protectionist world

in 20 years we will view letting people under 18 use social media like how we view  1950s viewed smoking in the office or using cocaine as an over the counter medicines.  it will be unfathomable to future generations that we let people under 18 use social media like how we are now.  its a cancer to society.  gen z was raised with cell phones and social media from a young age and it shows.  little critical thinking/emotional fragility/inablity to focus/increased depression rates/increased rates of people "checking out" of society / lack of intellectual drive / stunted ability to make meaningful friendships.....etc etc

millennials at least spent the childhood and teenage years(development years), without social media or cellphones.  Gen Z I worry about a lot.

Portia in the white lotus season 2 really is the typical gen Z mess individual.

In 20 years it will be viewed the same way people viewed radio, TV, video games, cell phones, the internet, pretty much any kind of music.  Just regular entertainment that out of touch older generations think is going to destroy society.

I feel like a lot of the political pressure is from big US social media companies lobbying to get it banned under the guise of data protection. TikTok is their biggest threat and their algorithm to show videos is so much better than most of the US social media sites.

I bet their plan is to lobby to get TikTok banned, use all of TikToks good ideas, and not have to compete with a “cooler” and faster growing company.
