Also made the switch from finance to consulting. Everyone uses pivot tables, it's normal. For how we use them to simply sort and map data, it works plenty well enough. Honestly, now that I think about it, we could probably get more done actually just burying into SQL or Python, but this is consulting after all and our industry isn't exactly known for being the most technically savvy.

I used pivot tables all the  time at MBB when we needed data to be cut quickly. Best practices that I had were:

1) Don't touch the raw data or modify it

2) Add columns to raw dataset when you need additional calculations done, or when you need to group things in certain ways

3) Create a separate sheet foor any index/match lookups

4) Create a pivot table on the raw data plus the new columns you added

5) Format appropriately

6) When you need additional pivot tables in new sheets, just copy and create a duplicate of that sheet, don't make a new pivot table, saves time
