Visa Sponsorship as a European

Currently a second year IB analyst at a Spanish Bank. Are there any pathways to IB NYC without doing a masters in The US itself? Any inside information on firms that often hire internationals/sponsor visas would be greatly appreciated. Moreover, I would love to hear stories from international students who have successfully navigated the process.

Thanks so much

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about visa sponsorship and pathways to IB roles in NYC as an international candidate:

  1. Firms That Sponsor Visas:

    • Bulge Brackets: Firms like Goldman Sachs (GS), Bank of America (BofA), Citi, Credit Suisse (CS), and Deutsche Bank (DB) are known to sponsor visas for international candidates. These firms generally do not discriminate against international applicants and have established processes for visa sponsorship.
    • Elite Boutiques: Firms such as Evercore (EVR), Lazard (LAZ), Moelis & Company (MOE), and PJT Partners are also known to sponsor visas, though sponsorship might be more selective and often reserved for top candidates.
  2. Firms That Do Not Sponsor:

    • Some firms explicitly do not sponsor visas, such as JPMorgan (JPM) among bulge brackets and Centerview, FT Partners, and PWP among elite boutiques.
  3. Uncertain Sponsorship Policies:

    • For firms like Barclays, Morgan Stanley (MS), UBS, and others, sponsorship policies may vary year to year or depend on the specific office or role.
  4. Pathways Without a U.S. Master’s:

    • Lateral Hiring: Transitioning from your current role in Spain to a U.S. office of a global bank where you already have a network or internal connections can be a viable pathway. Networking within your current firm or leveraging alumni connections is key.
    • Networking: Building relationships with professionals in NYC through LinkedIn, industry events, or referrals can help you identify opportunities where firms are open to sponsoring international candidates.
    • Targeted Applications: Focus on firms with a history of sponsoring visas and highlight your unique skills or experiences that align with their needs.
  5. Stories from International Candidates:

    • Many international candidates have successfully navigated the process by excelling in their current roles, networking extensively, and targeting firms with established sponsorship policies. Some have also leveraged internal mobility programs within their firms to transfer to U.S. offices.
