He never said he had a problem with weed?

I think it depends a lot on location and bank/group culture. At big banks, at least when I was recruiting in mid-2010s, most places had drug tests, so you would have to hold off for a while at least until you hit the desk (no problem after you start). It's a bit more relaxed now, but I believe drug tests are still in place for a lot of groups.

On the other hand, at the boutique where I did my summer analyst stint in SF, literally everyone in the office from analyst to director smoked weed.

I remember the 2nd year analyst I was working under taking me out to smoke a fat joint at lunch the second to last week of the summer...

Vividly recall the paranoia as I walked back into the office that everyone would know (they did...especially after the 2nd year passed out face down at her desk lmao)

Still got the return offer though (turned it down ultimately).

During my AN1 days, I would leave the office, walk 3 blocks to the dispo and buy a pre roll, order my uber and walk back to office. Get home, and prob at around 1:00 - 3:00am on average when I would go to sleep id smoke a fat joint, scroll socials for 15 mins and pass out.

The only thing that “motivated” me was that i knew once I got home I could sit in my boxers and smoke a joint and vibe out for a couple minutes before bed.

My recommendation though, just don’t do it. The same way you wouldn’t get drunk on a Monday or Tuesday afternoon. You never know when you will be needed and can’t afford to be intoxicated in any way. Saturday’s I would blaze tf up no regards tho

Former daily smoker for over a decade. Stopped because it started impacting my short term memory and giving me anxiety. It’s great when you have no real responsibilities but starts to hold you back as you move up and start to settle down

Weed slows you down. Maybe once in a while but I wouldn't smoke constantly.

I was in the best shape of my life smoking 1 ounce per month, doing Muay Thai, BJJ and Ironmans.

Just my experience with it, but when I used cannabis I was absolutely abusing edibles and it made me less effective / reliable. Weekends trying to relax and late nights trying to fall asleep. Total overkill. Currently 100% sober and it makes a big difference in work and life. Had a worse drinking problem but if I kept taking edibles I probably would have fell out my window or some shit I was acting retarded.

Edibles are just too strong in legalized places like NYC, and in general, they just last too long. Take one at night, and you wake up feeling the pure fog in your brain...Something about the processing at legalized disensaries just hits different I swear. Maybe it's just my neurochemistry, but idk.

I only smoke nowadays out of joints I roll myself with flower from a trusted source. Was ridiculous when we lit up in Jamaica on vacation. It was so much milder and more relaxing.

The chronic in NYC, especially in edible form, feels more like a psychedelic trip, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes...I just wanna relax haha, and mini joints always get the job done.

I was a consultant at Bain for three years and I smoke several times a week. When I graduated college, my interest in drinking tanked, and I started enjoying weed more.

I think it's totally fine to smoke. I obviously didn't bring it up in casual conversation with partners, but most people in my analyst class knew and I would smoke with them on occassion. Bain doesn't conduct drug tests, though I'm not sure if IB firms do.

My advice would be:

  • Be careful about letting smoking crowd out your social activity. Smoking generally will make you less social.
  • Be careful about smoking on weeknights. There were a few instances when I logged off for the night and took an edible only to find out about an hour later than some deck edits needed to be made. You do not want to be in an Excel model while high off your ass. Excel with some very very minor penjamin activity can be a vibe though.
  • A few people on this forum have mentioned that smoking gave them anxiety, made them less productive, etc. -- with all drugs / vices, do it in moderation and ensure that it doesn't negatively affect your daily life. I have found doing dry January / sober October once per year is a great way to check in with your mind/body and see if you are overly relying on any substances.

~5 YOE in banking - still do it quite frequently at night, no problems although if you overdo it you could be a bit groggy the next day / short term memory. with that being said, at a junior level where you may not be able to properly log off, go easy on it but as i've gotten more senior and have somewhat more visibility of my evenings, who cares. still able to make the gym on most early mornings so do what works for you and no harm in enjoying the last hour or so or your evening
