What car do you drive ??

Hi everyone, first time posting here.

I’m curious, what kind of car do you drive? I know most people in NYC don’t usually have one, but if you do, how are your car payments looking?

Me : Jeep Renegade --> parent's car but available everyday (fully paid already)

Edit : I'm in Switzerland

When I throw Blizzaks on it there is literally no where that car won't take me no matter what the snow conditions are.

No, just somebody that doesn’t tie their masculinity up with their vehicle. That, and I have places deep in the backcountry to get to in deep winter. Places I regularly see giant compensation trucks get stuck and require rescue.

how's your transmission? I used to have a 2014 and ended up having a lot of transmission issues

Never had a car payment. I paid cash for both of my NA limited editions, (long story about the ex there) and the current ND1 which I think i sold to my father for $1. I think that one was $24k-ish from the dealer when it came back from a 2yr lease.  I think we're going to settle somewhere around $8k for my Mom's old Kia Optima  because I need something quiet to park in the city. (little red convertible doesn't work.  I've got a story about when my grandmother Elenor was using Dad's candy red 67 Stingray with the side pipes and hot 327 to go to Midlantic bank, and that was a dumb jersey bimbo who wanted to meet the 'guy from the bank with the hot car')

For context, Elanor a was 4'10" teller there with coke bottle glasses who never got your change wrong. she could handle the four on the floor though.

Fun fact: more Miatas are currently sold with manuals than any other car in north america.

Boring ass story.

what do you drive brodie? I've referenced the stingray, all three Miata I've owned personally, and I could go into all my dad's crappy British cars before the 914 and 911 targa.

F80 M3 ZCP 6MT. First realistic dream car of mine, picked it up last spring as a second year analyst. I put a lot down so pay about $800 a month, and insurance is about $160 a month.

$160/mo insurance is a deal

I know you're dealing with a lot (still so sorry) but full coverage on an older easy to repair car is still around that even in NYC.

I mean no disrespect, and the car is nice, but WHY? an $800 car payment is a lot. I have bosses who would put your (or my) net worth to shame who don't own a car, and I'd bet my 2016 ND1 GT 6MT is 95% as much fun. Miata is always the answer.

to be fair I do dream of a CTS-V Wagon sometimes, but my Accountant/Lawyer/FBI agent/ DOD Forensic tax expert friend (and former college roommate) says bad things about them as depreciating assets.

$800 really isn't a lot. The whole "I know X who makes a shit ton of money and likes shitty things" will always be the worst argument ever. If you don't like cars you could never understand. Same as the watch thing in a way. And Miatas are so lame - slow, look boring, feel cheap. There's a reason you almost never see them despite all the hype they get from 'enthusiasts' on a car budget.

My car also doesn't really depreciate. It's a great spec and low mileage so I could probably sell it for about the same I bought it for a year and a half ago. Sure, I still lose money on insurance, parking, maintenance, etc., but if you're going to complain about that then why buy anything ever? Unless you live in a cardboard box, never eat out, and never go on vacation I have a hard time believing you don't understand why other people like things.

Heavily considering one of those right now. How do you like it?

I have a Lexus RC350 and planning on trading that for a decent C6. Also not NYC

Mr. Disagreeable

What year? I'm driving a 2018 X3 right now. They're awesome! Any opinion on the new X3 redesign for 2025?

I have two of them - a 2018 and a 2019. I drive the 2018 but I have several drivers in my house.  The redesign does not look like anything special to me.

I'm much more of a R211 fan myself, but how do you like it compared to the R62A?  I also always went to HS on R33s-R36s  There was something special about them.

(Also, don't do any more to tell me you live on the UWS, and don't have a car)

Same 5th Gen 4runner, Late 90s M3, and Honda CRV, total with insurance and parking on all three cars is about $900/mo. the Beamer has under 60k miles and the two Japanese cars have under 30k miles on them, no plan on anything for a long time. Though we might pick up a late 2010s Landcrusier with low mileage for the beach vehicle.

Only have pmts right now since had to get the 5th gen 4runner before the 6th came out, had a 4th gen prior but we are thinking kids and need one vehicle with upgraded safety features

Tell me that you've seen money for five seconds in your life without telling me you've only ever seen money for five seconds in your life.

I assume it's fully financed at a 12% interest rate too?

2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser. Having a car in NYC is huge quality of life enhancement.

Maybe if you're taking trips outside of the city, but within the city, not sure how it is a huge quality of life enhancement.

Late 2000s Honda Pilot lol... not rusty like the OG IlliniProgrammer's, but love the car - don't drive much and have kept it in great condition since it's pretty much always parked indoors, gets me from point A to B perfectly fine, no shit software updates to deal with, tons of space and technically 8 person seating, AWD. It's nice not having a car payment and the reliability means upkeep costs are low + being in a city I worry less about it getting dinged up.

Next car will probably be a slightly used newer model RAV4 or something similar.

I was about to say... if you didn't mention a rusty Honda, I would. How's the Pilot? If Subaru didn't plan to discontinue the Legacy, I'd be looking at replacing my 2014 with another one in a few years, but I want to look for good options for something just like that - keep it in great condition, be a good daily driver, and be extremely reliable.
