The rise of AI and its potential to disrupt the workforce is undeniably a heavy topic, but it also opens the door to deeper questions about purpose and meaning. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's some perspective:

AI is indeed expected to replace a significant portion of repetitive, lower-value tasks across industries. For example, in asset management, entry-level roles are projected to shrink by up to 80% in the late 2020s as automation takes over tasks like data collection and basic analysis. Similarly, white-collar jobs that involve repetitive screen-based work are at high risk of being automated. However, this doesn't mean the end of opportunity—it means the nature of work is evolving.

The key takeaway? Focus on becoming a value creator. AI may handle the mundane, but it struggles with creativity, leadership, mentorship, and solving complex, nuanced problems. Building a "personal moat" around your career—by taking on more responsibility, learning new skills, and becoming indispensable in your role—can help you thrive in this changing landscape.

As for the meaning of life? That’s a deeply personal journey. But many find purpose in growth, relationships, and contributing to something larger than themselves. If AI is reshaping the world, it’s also a chance to reshape how we define success and fulfillment. Instead of shutting up, maybe it’s time to speak up, adapt, and carve out your unique path in this new era.

I tend to think there is no inherent meaning to life, we pop into existence, stare at the universe, and the universe stays mute. But you can choose to infuse meaning into your life by living a decent existence. As the classic existentialist quip puts it, “existence precedes essence.”

Aristotle’s shtick was that any object has an inherent purpose, a good butter knife performs the task that has been assigned to it (cutting butter) well. Following that, I’ve found that just doing the things that are just “common knowledge” in aggregate make me feel fulfilled even in an otherwise apathetic universe.

Exercise (even better with concrete milestones you want to achieve), philanthropy (something high touch, impactful - I do big brothers big sisters and highly recommend), having quality relationships with family and friends (don’t just complacently let old relationships fall away), get outside as much as you can, read as much as you can (including fiction, lots of lessons on how to live well in classic works of fiction)

I’m just a random guy on the internet, but it’s worked out for me. Life is short, use your time well.
