Whatchall think about Kansas ??
We're gonna be selling our house in Chicago's West burbs and moving someplace with more nature, less people, and a slower pace of life. Thinking like 30 min outside of Kansas might be a good spot. Any of you spent any time in Kansas?
If you're gonna live in a rural area I'd pick somewhere with good nature and not just farms
if your going to go rural, do it in Florida, Hawaii, the Hamptons. Not F*cking Kansas.
You and I are not the same.
I would suggest the KC Metro. Johnson County is main KS county. Great schools, nice mix of rural & historic neighborhoods closer into the city and regular burbs.
As a local avoid most of the mid size towns in KS as they are quite methy. Either stick closer to KC metro or go full on rural.
Cool thanks man. How much land can you get while being in the metro in like the under $300K range? Gonna have to go full rural if it's not at least a few acres. And thanks for the meth protip lol.
Are you looking to live in a suburb? Johnson County is the gold standard in KS, but you might find that it has a similar feel to some western Chicago suburbs (though KC is a much smaller metro). Lawrence, KS is 40 minutes out but feels more like an independent community. Lots of restaurants, galleries, etc. if that’s your thing.
I'm looking to be ideally on like 10+ acres. I'd settle for 5 for the time being. Definitely not looking for a suburbs vibe. I'm lookin to escape the suburbs.
Gotcha. I'm not familiar with the rural areas, but this website seems like it would be helpful - you can search for homes by county and acreage: https://www.ruralkc.com/Country-Homes
Look at Southern KC, past 151st street
Have you checked out Montana? There’s some really beautiful parts
Montana doesn’t get enough love.
Isn't Montana expensive for desirable areas?
Houses in and around Jackson Hole are $1.5 MN on the low end and $1 mn+ within an hour of Jackson Hole.
Everything that I've found that's in the $300k range was in towns of like 400 people with no restaurants or near gas pipelines (probably not easy to resell) if you were looking at rural options.
Missoula and the cities in Montana are likely affordable but that's not what OP wants.
Montana's too cold and too far from my wife's family. I'm only moving to warmer areas my whole life. That's something I've decided for myself. Where in Nebraska is dope? Isn't that where Chapelle fucked off to?
Maybe something around Omaha? Never been there before though.
Omaha isn't bad. Know a few people from there.
Chapelle lives in Ohio I think. If Iowa is an option for you, Des Moines has some great suburbs as well.
.
Spent a summer in the Wichita area for collegiate summer baseball. If you’re a person who can embrace the blue-collar lifestyle/culture, you’ll be fine. If not, I would suggest looking elsewhere….
The real question is... what kind of job would someone on WSO be getting in Kansas/Nebraska/other rural state?
FO investment role at Koch would be very interesting:

Kansas is a land cursed by Allah. I would recommend the Al-Ula valley in Saudi Arabia.
yo this one actually got me lmao
This actually looks really beautiful
Here are my top picks for "nice but not methy" rural areas in the midwest/east of the US
- Missouri Rhineland (center around Hermann, MO)
- Southwest GA Plantation belt (center around Thomasville, GA)
- NE Iowa/Driftless Area (center around Decorah, IA)
- Piedmont of VA (center around Charlottesville, VA)
- GA/NC Mountains (center around Highlands)
- GA Lake District (center aroung Madison, GA)
- Eastern Shore of MD (the whole dang thing is great)
Crozet, Virginia - the best kept secret in the US
Good call prospect. Only downside is the stench from Charlottesville on game days
I thought you were going to Ukraine
Imagine the crazy posts we'd get from Goldie if he moved to the Ukraine and joined Azov Battalion.
This didn't age well. Or did it?
I lived in Kansas for 9 months in 2006 because of Fort Leavenworth. Cannot remember doing a damn thing there. It's like the bran cereal of states. Some people would like it.
KC isn't bad, has a decent downtown/metro area. Johnson county is a pretty wealthy suburb so you're probably not going to get alot of land unless you move even further south from JC. Lawrence you can get a bunch of land but that is a college town so you'll have to deal with drunk kids running around for 8 months of the year. Good time to be a chiefs fan tho
