What's happened to this site?

I mean, I'm happy Patrick's put together a good product and it's doing well, but WSO has become so (forgive my pejorative use of the word) mother fucking gay. I haven't seen an entraining post on here in months on top of relevant content getting thiner. Initially I thought I felt this way about WSO because I had landed a legitimate gig & was maybe maturing, the fact I'm posting this whole deal proves that I'm definitely not. I know this site initially catered to people working as well as college kids, but recently it seems to be exclusively college kids rehashing the same shit advice they'd read from other college kids on here.

Most importantly (this is were the gay part comes in), 99% of the topics here are way to fucking serious. I just read some deal about whether a head dress is moral or not. Seriously, what the fuck. I'm not knocking what you do or don't believe, but if you need some moral/spiritual stimulation go buy a Deepak Shopra audio book. No body talks shit on one another anymore; when I first started coming on WSO & would post something dumb/naive, I would get ripped a new one. I hate to say it, but I kind miss the Piper Jaffray trolls. Bottom line is the entertainment value's gone down as well as the resource quality. IMHO, this site has gone soft & maybe that's the way it is, but WSO previously was an entertaining half hour break out of my school/work day, now I come here mainly out of habit. Maybe it's just me.

Banker88This post is so Piper Jaffray-ish.

That's what I'm talking about. Well done.

Its just you.

But seriously. Stuff has changed from 3 years ago (when I first found IBO), but Patrick keeps good care of this place, I'm not too worried.

ZIRHwtf does piper jaffray-ish mean?

Case in point.

ideatingI think part of the problem is some of the moderators lock threads or delete stuff that is just ridiculous.

I called AnthonyD1982 an "asshat" and he edited it out. If you can't call someone "asshat", how can you expect any real entertainment?

Agree. The "unconstructive thread" argument is retarded, as long as people respond the thread is not unconstructive, if a thread is unconstructive noone will respond anyway and there is no need to lock.

Personally I like to read ppl's endless debate about prestige ranking, target school, and so on. give me a good break during a stressful day.

Jesus, are you still bitching about that. Only reason I edited it was because the thread was pretty damn volatile and name calling can quickly shit can a thread like that.

The site ebbs and flows. Sometimes great posts come up and then you will have a week of non stop repeat questions. I think this is because you always have a steady stream of undergraduate kids finding this site and starting their quest into IBD or whatever.

? This is the first time I mentioned it, only to point out how lame some of the mods (you) are. But yeah, westfald's point is definitely valid but unfortunately not a new concern.

I agree with the original post on this thread. I used to come to this site when I was a second year analyst back in 2006/7. Those were indeed the days!

I actually think it needs more people in industry contributing. I now find efinancialcareers more entertaining!

College kids - the recipe to get a job is pretty simple. Get good grades. Dress properly. Learn the basics that you KNOW YOU WILL BE ASKED about in interviews. Have a personality and turn up on time. Enhance your resumé with some nice value-added extra-curricular stuff, be able to link it all in to your motivations for finance and voilá.

Anyway, I came back as this is my last week at one of the super-boutiques. I am headed back to the big-timers, the high-rollers, the mofo integrated platform model baby!

From the ghetto....

Westfald, I don't think discussing serious topics is boring, and neither do a lot of people. I get the need for light hearted discussion, and I get the fact that you are upset that it’s been toned down a notch. But it's not like serious discussion and light-hearted banter are mutually exclusive. Some people may be interested in what a Nobel Laureate had to say about the definition of liberty; others, like you, may not. But I think that variety adds to the site, it does not detract from it. It would be equally boring if everyone just posted about how wasted they got, or how they fucked a really hot bitch in the ass on the subway before sniffing cocaine off of her pussy. Discussing intellectual topics like this:

adds to the community. If people did not like it, they would not post.

It's models & bottles not Kierkegaard & chardonnay. Besides, I was just busting your chops. Although you should finish the your story from above. Sounds like a great read.

Unfortunately, I have missed this as I joined recently. Can you guys point me to some of the legendary threads from the good old days?

I just play to win...

Grass is always greener ....

Anyone remember the constant complaints Patrick was getting from the more senior members when the trolls were rampaging around?

Westfald, before I continue, let me just say I agree with you. However, In the monty09 - story time thread, he let us have free reign to ask him for any type of stories. Models and bottles, interview stories, chicks on the job, and the most crazy, awesome story you thought he might be able to tell is

westfaldTell me about SAC? My friend just started running money there. We hung out a ton when was running a book at this little hedge fund; I haven't heard from him since he started.
.

In any case, the fact of the matter is that that thread blew up with people begging for any good story from monty. There's obviously a great demand for lighthearted or borderline inappropriate content on WSO; I don't think anyone here thinks that the Nobel Laureate thread would get anywhere near the amount of page views a great story would. From a pure economic standpoint, this is a website where a large portion of revenue comes from ads. A ridiculous story or ripping on the next Jeffrey Chiang will go "viral" and bring in new users (and more revenue) long before an insightful review of Burqas. Especially when mods lock down good threads.

PS - I sat and considered not citing westfald specifically here, but considering the nature of this thread, I did
