Top firms in Chicago (Lazard & Greenhill) blow out most NYC firms for comp, exits, and culture. Anything apart from those 2 and you're looking at MM PE in Chicago, and would rather be in NYC

Typically most firms compensate roughly equally at junior levels. Taxes and COL are lower in Chicago. Exit ops aren’t as good in Chicago as NYC, but it’s not like you can’t get position at a great firm.

I don't work in Chi but our HQ is there so I spent a week there working out of there and getting to know the city a little bit and here are a few thoughts. NYC wins hands down for nightlife and food. However, NYC frankly has way too many people in it, and the same thing that makes the city thrive when it comes to food and nightlife also makes it overwhelming on a chill saturday afternoon. Every park, museum and cafe is packed with way too many people. It feels like you have no "mental" space. Like you can never be further than 10 feet from the nearest human. Do you think you would actually take advantage of being near the ocean in NYC? IE going on boat trips, taking the ferry, going to the beach? If not, fuck NYC
