What's your guiding North Star?

When reading through a profile of an investor who is really successful, one of their comments was around having a "North Star." He's a successful physician, has tended to many patients, and has continued to help millions more through developing medicines with Flagship Pioneering. 

You need to have a North Star: you need to know what is going to guide you through a crisis. My North Star is patient impact, and it has guided me through several career crises.

Have you ever given thought about what a North Star is to you? In a world which money and prestige are paramount (and don't count these out on these factoring into your north star, I just don't think they hold lasting value for myself), I was wondering how you think about having a "North Star," and keeping through that while trying to do the best you can. 

I would think that most people in this forum are trying to get a job in finance, and trying to "make it" in this world, and would count God, family, and friends part of their guiding north star.

Do you think that finance isn't part of your north star other than getting a pay cut and going home and tending to your north star? How do you balance that with the sheer number of hours which you spend in the day-to-day grind? Just a few reflective questions that I had after reading this article, and was curious about your thoughts.

If you focus all your thoughts on the end goal of “making it”, you’ll never be happy in the moment. Your goal should be to build a life/career that you don’t mind waking up to every day for the next twenty years. If you have a job you enjoy + a fulfilling personal life, you worry a lot less about hitting certain career milestones this year versus next. You’ll just keep living life and wake up one day twenty years from now with a nice pile of money. 
 

I suppose this only applies if you’re in your preferred field. If you haven’t broken into IB/PE or your desired career path yet, your outlook might be different.

You said a lot of words and didn’t mention your North Star at all.

My goal is to channel all of my talent and hard work toward the advancement of mankind. How exactly to do that, I have no idea.

Just help others. In all situations. That's how you benefit mankind.

God has always been my North Star. I pray and ask for guidance, discernment and confidence in my decision making. I feel that he has always guided me to where I’m meant to be. 
 

Finance is just a way to pay the bills and be generous. I like the saying my money is Gods money, I’m just the manager. I’ve been incredibly blessed in life and try to share that as much as I can. I try to live modestly to support my family, demonstrate good Christian values and help others whenever I can. Part of this is also some financial sacrifice, driving older cars, having a modest house…etc to give more generosity and be a whole lot less anxious.
