Where to live in NYC? Wanting east side, roomate wants west side

Background is myself and another roommate both incoming IB analysts want to live in two separate areas either in east or in west because of respective side bank's locations. I was thinking maybe Flatiron or somewhere south midtown ish as a compromise? How is that location? I've only ever seen the East Village and Chelsea locations and it seems that East Village is a lot more popping with the early 20s crowd and Chelsea or around that area is more for the late 20s early 30s crowd. I could be wrong only spent 9 weeks in NYC. Love to hear some advice / suggestions / thoughts about which side is better for a 22 yo or does it even matter.
