Women in the Workplace - Open Door Policy

So Mike Pence is getting some criticism for having a policy where he doesn't meet with female staffers one-on-one.

I know a few senior guys who have a similar rule, and will keep an open door in their office or invite a male colleague along when there is a one-on-one meeting with a female. Their reasoning seems to make sense: for sexual allegations (true or not) you are essentially guilty until proven innocent, and it instantly creates a label/perception that you will never be able to shake. It can destroy careers and lives if it comes down to one person's word versus another.

So what are your thoughts? Is having this type of policy suitable to "keep things professional" and cover your ass? Or is it downright sexist? It seems like your character is at risk either way.

Pence is a religious dude. This is a respectful thing. Think about it like this. The press would love nothing more than to catch a rumor of Pence being inappropriate. Something about Republicans cheating on their wives just gets tons of airtime. Since this can't happen, he is getting mocked for a practice that is pretty respectful of his wife.

Go get married and start having late night dinner with female coworkers and see what happens.

If he can't have dinner w/ a female coworker then he shouldn't with males. Working dinners are a chance to network and move up the ladder and if he is having them with males and not females that is blatant discrimination that can affect their career. Idgaf about his religion he needs to be a professional. I also find it appalling that he thinks he doesn't have the self control to be at an event w/ alcohol/ a professional dinner alone with a woman without thoughts of sex coming to mind.

Ok, Pence is a weird dude. But politics aside, it seems that many execs are conscious of the boss/subordinate relationship and don't want to jeopardize any thoughts circulating after meeting with female colleagues one-on-one, behind closed doors.

I think TNA said it best above, even if it is just business, these types of meetings can get people wondering and open up a lot of speculation and rumors that can potentially damage your reputation. At best, it can receive small gossip about hookups. At worst, it can lead to full fledged allegations that put a boss on the defensive to prove innocence, versus proving guilt. At that point, even if you recover your reputation is destroyed.

Open-door policies are obviously discriminating against women. But in all seriousness is it worth mitigating the risk?

dude idgaf if you want to keep an open door or not do business dinners. Just keep the playing field level for EVERYONE. Period. It's that simple. If he doesn't do business dinners alone with women he should do the same with men. It really isn't that difficult a concept.
