WSO Weekly Wrap-Up (12/19-12/25)
In case you missed them, here're some of last week's most popular topics:
5 things I wish I had known when I was a business undergrad...
Post By @angelz629"
I graduated from a top 10 undergraduate business school in the US with a GPA of 3.85/4.0, an honors degree with a double major and a minor, and received an offer to work at one of the top 10 Fortune Global 500 companies. I thought I was a badass and ready to conquer the world by taking over the C-suite. Little did I know, there were some basics I needed to learn first.
Switching from Big 4 to Acquisitions: My Story
Post By @AcquisitionsGuy"
I received a lot of PMs over the past few months about how I switched from Big 4 audit to REIT acquisitions. Here is the path I took and some suggestions for those who are trying to make the switch. I welcome other RE veterans to post their suggestions as well.
Absence of "running my own hedge fund" topics
Post By @SSits"
It seems like we have gone an abnormally long period without someone posting a thread about joining a friend to run their own "hedge fund", which typically invests a few million from their family wealth in vanilla public equities. What are we to make of this? Is this a sign that markets are not doing well?
Activism
Post By @Jared Dillian"
I wanted to write a short piece about activism as a strategy, since hedge fund strategies seem to go in and out of fashion, and activism did not work so well this year. So why is it no longer working?
Would it be dumb to turn down Princeton for Dartmouth?
Post By @Rand231"
I got into Princeton in the early round, and I am starting to have second thoughts. The only reason I did not apply to Dartmouth early was because I wanted to keep my options open. During my visit to Dartmouth last year, I really loved the environment! Would I be foregoing any opportunities in the business world by going to Dartmouth over Princeton? Does Princeton really have better recruiting?
Six things I have learned after joining a top business school (Part 2/2)
Post By @LBS Bloggers"
By now, the most important thing I can remark is that an MBA/MiF is not necessarily about what you get from the class hours, but from what happens after them. Business school pushes you to bring up competencies that were either hidden or that you had to develop from scratch to cope with the expectations of being a business student. Continuing from my previous post, here are a few things which I want to share about my life at LBS.
What to talk about with Execs in social situations?
Post By @pere797"
What are good topics to bring up, questions to ask or radom things to say when you meet principals and executives of your firm? This would be a social situation and bear in mind that we do not interact at any other time of year because they are based at our HQ office, which is out of state. I am not the type to BS my way through stupid conversations about stuff I do not know about (e.g. wine clubs, golf, etc).
The Suspense Is Over
Post By @BMR-16"
For the first time in a decade, the US Federal Reserve raised interest rates in what was a pretty expected decision. So, what does this mean for us and the US economy in general?
