Anyone Interested in IB or PE recruiting (HK&LDN)? Happy to answer and discuss!

Monkeys, I work for a USD mega fund based in HK. Previously I was an analyst for a US bb IB based in HK and LDN. Graduated from Oxbridge. I would be happy to answer if you have any recruitment Qs in Hong Kong or London.

Some updates:
I am happy to do some complementary IB mock interviews or career advices sessions (45mins session) Please feel free to PM me.

So how's the deal flow actually like now? Heard that decent targets only take gov/SOE-related affiliated money now. Also BBs are cutting down like crazy.

Would you think the hiring is gonna get better any time soon? Asking coz I like the market a lot and ideally want to move over in a year or two

*Asking about HK here

TIV!

Not sure about the trading floor, for IBD- I would say not good but getting better. Pipelines are on cycle. However, for now, I didn't see any banks hiring for a front role in Hong Kong. For lateral junior (ana/asso) hiring, you should regularly check the official career sites. Saw you work in consulting. I suggest you do networking a lot with headhunters and industry professionals to get some inside info. That will be helpful.

Thanks for sharing. Meaning to ask both IB and PE

Yeah def keeping in touch with friends in HK. Getting the same vibe. Doesn't look like IB hiring is getting back soon.

Can you elaborate a bit more on how USD/ foreign funds are doing atm? Interested in hc, pipeline, trendy sectors etc.

What are associate salaries in hk ibd like, for BB versus tier 2/3 banks? Does everyone automatically get housing allowance too?

What were hours like when you was at a BB versus the fund you’re in now?

Is everyone back to working from office now in hk, full 5 days a week?

thank you!

What are associate salaries in hk ibd like, for BB versus tier 2/3 banks? Does everyone automatically get housing allowance too?

  • Given that I left banking at the analyst level, I give you an analyst base for your reference- 79k HKD per month
  • Yes, you'll get the housing allowance
  • I am not sure about the tier 2/3 banks

What were hours like when you was at a BB versus the fund you're in now?

  • BB I usually left my firm around 11 pm
  • Now, I leave around 10 pm on average

Is everyone back to working from office now in hk, full 5 days a week?

  • Yep

Very helpful thanks!

I assume you left banking 1 or 2 years ago now, or more recent? (Just curious as guess ANL salaries may be higher now with the industry pay rises). Is housing allowance include in your 79k figure or is on top?

How are you finding culture in hk versus london? Any major differences that stand out or took time getting used to? What are the things you like/dislike about working in hk now?

I am looking to move soon from London to hk so finding this thread super useful, thanks!

I gave the current average salary for analyst year one. And yes, housing allowance is included. I can’t talk more about the salary given that is confidential lol.

I am fine with living in HK. No conflict for me. But one thing about be careful about your little secret like dating stuff, ppl in here is so snoopy and your life interlocked with them so tight no matter what (Crying here…..)

Sharing my 2 cents here. I worked in HK for SA in BB IBD but moved over to London now.

  • work culture: slightly more relaxed in UK but still long hours! More respectful over holidays though
  • pay: substantial haircut, HK was 70kHKD per month at the time (not sure about bonus) vs London GBP60K (higher bonus figures 50-100%). Tax makes a huge difference lol
  • vibes as an Asian: definitely felt more “out of my comfort zone” in London vs. HK, in terms of office chit chat, hobbies. Also not as close with colleagues than I would be in hk (used to hang out outside of work… when you’re not in the office!) - think that’s understated
