Best Tech PE investing out of undergrad?
Rising sophomore at HYP looking to recruit for tech investing (open to growth/VC/buyout) and wondering how prep looks like for this and what firms are considered top that have an intern program. I did SWE this summer and want to move into finance but really only into tech investing (not interested in IB) so really curious on top options
ib is designed for people who don't know the answers to these questions
Well I’ve read and know some of the big firms like Francisco partners vista etc. but don’t know much abt current outlook, current exits, internal mobility, return offer rates and how they compare to other firms e.g. Insight, Bessemer in terms of all that. I did a fair alr of homework but wanted more current outlook perspective
I’m an analyst at Vista but had offers in other tech PE/GE. In my eyes, the best spots out of undergrad for purely tech were SL, Vista, BVP, and Insight (idk if SL still takes analysts though). All of the other GE/VC/PE places just don’t compare for tech investing out of school.
Would also be wary of going to many well known GE firms out of undergrad, the only one I’d recommend is Insight. The others are primarily 2 and out (w/ poor exits) and you don’t really build any transferrable skills.
Ok cool thanks so much for the info, I’ve actually read a lot about insight on this forum seems like exactly what I want with great pay and cool deals. Curious what it makes it so much better than everything else out of ug if you have any specific firm detail? Also for venture investing in the future, would insight be better than vista? Vista is the other tech investing firm that people rave about here all the time so your opinion would be very nice. Also although I’m very opposed to IB coming from my SWE background, some friends tell me if long term goal is tech investint then banking apparently is better to recruit for that, would getting an offer at these firms like insight vista be better than bankint at a prestigious firm like GS MS for long term tech investing? Thanks a lot for your help, can’t emphasize how helpful this forum has been for me learning about finance
From my understanding Insight is much more encouraging of internal promote. A ton of senior people started as analysts, which is a big draw of going straight to reputable buy side out of undergrad.
Hellman Friedman the best shop period, best way is to go through MS M&A
H&f ftw +1 again great women plus best pe tech shop
(
PL @hf ftw
I bet you couldn’t name two companies that H&F has invested in judging by one of your recent comments on this site: “how would you describe H&F’s investment strategy, value or growth oriented?”.
Francisco partners only takes a few summer analysts / analysts, but it's definitely up there as well
no shot someone just threw MS when I'm literally just being helpful
It would be difficult as most competitive candidates for PE analyst programs usually have done some legit IB or HF or PE internships not SWE.
Not sure how VC programs work tho maybe they are more receptive to your background.
