Controversial opinion about work
My motivation for a high finance job was for the money because growing up, money was tight… I worked a couple of years in banking right out of undergrad and then moved onto PE.
The work is more interesting on the PE side because you’re forced to “have your own thoughts” but I find all of that repetitive and boring now (ask same DD questions over and over again).
Any advice will be helpful. Sometimes I think about going back to banking so I can just focus on deal execution without being burdened with all this office politics and boring “ancillary” work I need to do on top of my day job. Not sure how long I can hang around for if it’s just for $.
Hey there, I totally get where you're coming from. High finance can be a grind, and it's not uncommon to feel like you're stuck in a loop. But remember, every job has its ups and downs, and it's all about finding what suits you best.
If you're finding the due diligence and office politics in PE draining, maybe a return to banking could be a good move. There, you can focus on deal execution, which seems to be what you enjoy. However, keep in mind that banking also has its own set of challenges, including long hours and high stress levels.
Alternatively, you could consider looking for a role in a smaller PE firm or a different industry altogether. Smaller firms often offer more varied work and less office politics. Or, if you're really not feeling the finance industry anymore, there's a whole world of opportunities out there in other sectors.
Remember, it's your life and your career. Don't feel like you have to stick it out in a job or industry that's making you unhappy just for the money. It's important to find a balance between a job that pays well and one that you find fulfilling.
And hey, don't forget to take some time for yourself too. It's easy to get caught up in the grind and forget to relax and enjoy life. You've got this!

Not having to work on portfolio companies, funds flow or do any DD and having all my models and outputs be “illustrative” would be pretty sweet actually
