Different PE Paths

Can someone please provide a comprehensive overview of all of the PE paths (Traditional buyout, special situations, opportunistic investing, distressed investing, real estate, infrastructure… etc? (High level, day to day, comp, hours, recruiting process, main pros/cons)

Thank you!!

This is not the comprehensive answer youre looking for but generally mega buyout shops pay the most but also have the worst work life balance (think higher aggregate salary, lower per hour...to a point). This also gives you the broadest exposure vs. special situations / tactical opps is more niche experience (doesn't mean it pays less or has better work life balance but just that it directs your career in a slightly different path).

Say if you want to go into corp dev or start a business, the buyout route is probably the "best" from that standpoint. If you want to start a software business, real estate investing probably isnt the way to go
