Gain on Sale of Assets
Should Gain on Sale of Assets be included in your EBITDA calculation? What about your Operating Income calculation? How would a gain on sale of asset affect your three statements? Thanks in advance, please help a finance newb consultant out...
EBITDA and EBIT should exclude gain on sale of assets, since this number isnt related to the normalized earnings of the company.
Lets assume you have gain on sale of assets of 50, book value of assets is 50, therefore total proceeds from sale is 100
IS - EBT up 50, 20% tax, NI up 40
CFS - CFO; NI up 40, gain on sale is not operating so down 50, net CFO down 10
CFI - sale of asset increases cash by 100
net CFS increase by 90
BS - Cash up 90, PPE (assuming asset was PPE) down 50, net change in assets = up 40
No change in L
SE up 40 from NI
BS matches
Thanks you! Super helpful. If it shouldn’t be included in EBITDA/EBIT, why do you have EBT up in your example - what am I missing here? Thanks again.
EBT as he is referring to is just earnings before tax in the income statement. Whereas EBITDA and EBIT are calculated values that you would subtract out / add back things like one time non recurring expenses / gains
Oh gotcha. Thanks! So when building your IS would you calculate EBIT and then subtract interest and non operating expenses (like this one) to get EBT?
Yes, I recommend getting a WSP, BIWS or any of the popular modeling courses to get more familiar on modeling if this stuff is new to you, I know they have bit of a price tag but if you are looking to get into PE, it'll be useful prep.
Also, since you work at MBB, what's the likelihood of someone in ER making a lateral move to mbb?
Thanks - yeah I already have those but evidently need to study them a bit more closely..
To answer your question, not sure about your experience, but M definitely hires experienced hire BAs from a variety of fields including ER. You’ll come in essentially as a BA (although with slightly higher pay), unless you have 5+ YoE, in which case you can be an associate.
It’ll depend on the strength of your resume and how well you do in interviews. I do think experienced hire hiring is significantly down since 21/22 though… but maybe worth a shot if you’re very motivated in the work. Probably would try to network with partners in an office you’re interested in and get a referral.
