How do you value a PE firm

Simple yet complicated (as I cant find info anywhere):

How do you value a PE FUND and how do you value a the PE FIRM (the mgmt. company)?

Would you add up the ownership value of each of the portfolio companies and carry / fees? There are public PE firms but those trade on the markets; this is for private PE funds....

How does someone like Dial Equity (who buy GP stakes) value PE funds? What metrics do they use?

A PE firm is in the business of raising funds that generate fee income and taking a share of profits of the companies they sell.

In addition, a PE firm can grow their AUM through larger core funds and launch new “products” (eg buyout, growth, credit).

GP stakes buyers take these factors into consideration when valuing the equity stake in the GP management company. Some factors have good reliability (management fees known for next 10 years), some can be estimated (estimated carry income) while product expansion and fund size growth would be harder to estimate.
