How to break into PE from public markets investing?

I am a research associate at a buy side firm with three years of experience. I am interested in making a move to private markets but am unsure how to do so - I have modeling and research reps through my job but no deal/transaction experience. Is it still possible to do this transition in this job market? If so what kind of skills/experiences/networking do I need to do? Thanks in advance.
