Is it possible to recruit on-cycle without a H-1B visa? Will any firms give you looks with just STEM OPT?

Wondering if there's even any point in throwing your name in the hat if you're part of the majority of analysts who didn't get H-1B this year.

Mod alert: We have announced a PE Interview boot camp for July 21, 2023. Check it out here: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/courses/live-training/private-equity-interview-bootcamp. Happy recruiting!

Edit: The Bootcamp is sold out. If you couldn't get a seat, please check out our PE interview Course. Good luck with the interviews!

Going through the buy side recruiting process this cycle and was lucky enough to get my H1B on the first try while still in college. Based on what HHs have told me - you could probably still try and recruit but it becomes exponentially more difficult without one. From the PE firm’s perspective it’s too much of a risk to hire someone if they don’t know whether they’re going to have work authorization past the 1 year mark (2 years in banking + 1 in PE).

Unlikely. Banks will take the risk since their analyst classes are large and they have plenty of room to move you to a different office abroad... MFs are smaller firms than banks and smaller offices. They would be losing a significant chunk of their class if you don't get H1B + they can't necessarily move you to a different office, that team may not need more hands.
