Ares (Corporate Opportunities / PE) has seen quite a few promotions from associate to partner over the years but they have lost their MF status with 2 consecutive down funds while the "top" MFs have kept raising larger funds despite market volatility.

Second this. Surprisingly high number of partners in all groups there who started as associates. Firm prefers to promote from within from what I’ve heard.
